Gunner Kiel Reportedly Backs out of LSU Commitment, Will He Head to Notre Dame?
The Notre Dame recruiting period has been a roller-coaster ride with numerous twists and turns to make their fans scream.
On Monday the news was incredibly promising according to Adam Gorney of Rivals.com with a little side commentary thrown in by CBS Sports' Bruce Feldman:
Kiel had verbally committed to LSU a few weeks ago, but that was before their 21-0 loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide.
The top senior quarterback in high school would be a giant boost for an Irish team that hasn’t had a star QB in seemingly forever. It would be the steal of the year for Brian Kelly.
Yet as Feldman reminds us, let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves:
Mike Farrell of Rivals.com is reporting that his three sources are split:
In addition to LSU, Vanderbilt was the other team to be in the running for Kiel. This is after he originally committed to play at Indiana so he could be on the same team as his brother Dusty. So while the Fighting Irish are now the leaders, his decision is still very much up in the air. Farrell suggests Dusty’s recent decision to leave Indiana may affect his younger brother’s resolution:
What makes Kiel so coveted? The five-star recruit has a strong arm and the mobility to avoid the pass rush, yet is still going to be a pocket passer.
It’s his brain that sets him apart. Kiel’s decision making and processing skills are outstanding for such a young player.
With the shaky QB Situation currently in South Bend, Kiel would be in the mix for the starting spot from Day 1.
While Irish fans should certainly be fired up about today’s news, just remember that Kiel already committed to two other schools.
This is a huge deal for Notre Dame and they need to do whatever he wants to ensure they get his name signed on the dotted line.
