Tottenham Transfer Rumors: Where Will Giovani Dos Santos End Up?
Giovani Dos Santos' time at White Hart Lane is about to come to a close, as The Sun has reported that several La Liga clubs are locked in a tug-of-war for the forward's services.
The Mexican international has been looking for a way back to Spain since leaving Barcelona and coming to London in 2008. In his four years with Tottenham, he's started only 14 matches for Spurs, playing mostly for clubs he was loaned out to like Ipswich, Galatasaray and Racing Santander.
It's puzzling that manager Harry Redknapp would give a young player with international experience so few chances, but it's hard to argue with the man rumored to take over for England's head coaching gig.
The most recent transfer window is closing in a matter of hours and, in addition to La Liga, there's plenty of clubs that Dos Santos could—and very well might—find himself playing for come Wednesday morning.
A transfer would be music to the ears of many Spurs fans as that money could be used to make sure that regular starters such as Emmanuel Adebayor, Gareth Bale or Luka Modric stay regular starters.
All signs point to the Tottenham forward leaving, but the question is where?
That said, I give you the most likely landing spots for Giovani Dos Santos.
Villareal
1 of 4I think it goes without saying, but this is the most likely destination for Dos Santos.
DailyMail.co.uk has reported that Villareal have put in a £6.5 million offer for the forward. After all, the club is desperate for offense and the only thing they need to escape relegation is a few more goals in the second half of the season.
However, this could stall due to the fact that Tottenham is holding out for more money—somewhere in the neighborhood of £8 million—but I believe Villareal could cave before Tottenham.
Why?
Because Villareal is currently sitting in the relegation zone. They have an interim manager in José Francisco Molina and a panicky front office that is very likely to overspend for a guy like Dos Santos.
Granada
2 of 4The Sun reported that Granada is another Spanish club that could serve as a potential landing spot for Dos Santos and for good reason—they're home to La Liga's worst offense, scoring just 14 goals in 20 matches.
However, Granada's not as bad as most think. Goalkeeper Roberto Fernández Alvalleros has made more saves (87) than anyone else in the league and his 1.28 goals against average is middle-of-the-road for La Liga.
The newly promoted club (who said they're the only Spanish club who have put in a "formal offer" for him) might try to leapfrog Villareal and get Dos Santos if they think he can provide enough offense to take some of the pressure off their lackluster defense.
After all, a score or two could have turned some of their draws (they've had eight in the first 20 matches, second most in La Liga) into wins.
Bolton
3 of 4DailyMail.co.uk has reported that Bolton might use the funds they've secured from defender Gary Cahill's move to Chelsea to lock up Dos Santos.
With the worst defense in the Premier League and a constant flirtation with relegation, manager Owen Coyle might just try to load up on strikers and simply outscore opponents.
Dos Santos' quickness and aggressiveness could be the spark that Bolton needs. He has a wicked shot from distance, which could do well for a club that—to put it bluntly—has had a terrible time getting the ball into the opponent's penalty box.
Wigan Athletic
4 of 4FootballGossip.org has also linked struggling Wigan Athletic with a move for Dos Santos, reporting that the club offered Tottenham "around £6 million" for the forward.
It'd be great if Wigan Athletic could get Dos Santos, as he'd surely be a starter for the remainder of the season and improve their horrid average of 0.86 goals per match.
Sadly, it looks less likely that the Latics will win a bidding war for Dos Santos and more likely they'll be relegated to The Championship.
