Lavar Johnson, After Throwing Up, Goes out and Finishes Beltran

Steven MuehlhausenJan 29, 2012

Lavar Johnson proved that Strikeforce heavyweights can compete in the UFC.

Johnson, who is the first Strikeforce fighter to go from there to the UFC, showed that he belongs in the UFC.

Johnson (16-5 MMA, 1-0) defeated veteran Joey Beltran (13-7 MMA, 3-4 UFC) via KO at 4:24 of Round 1.

Beltran refused to touch gloves with Johnson to begin the fight, and that seemed to give Johnson a little more motivation as he dropped Beltran early with a right hand that seemed to bother him.

Johnson was able to stuff a couple of takedown attempts and started to utilize his jab and control the distance.

Johnson threw some right hands behind the jab and landed four huge uppercuts that ended up putting Beltran out on his feet to end the fight.

That was first time in Beltran's UFC career that he has been stopped.

Watch above as we talk to Johnson about his victory at UFC on Fox 2, being the first Strikeforce crossover to win, being the first guy to finish Beltran and being a little nervous before the fight.

Johnson on if he felt any added pressure heading into the fight considering what he went through when he got shot three times a few years back: "I was a little nervous. I won't say added pressure, but just being it's the UFC, the big name. I was a little nervous and ended up throwing up in the dressing room before the fight.

"But, I kept everything together. I got a good team, kept my head straight and I went out there and I was able to stay composed and put in work."
