UFC on FOX 2 Results: Should Dan Henderson Pass Rashad in Title Contention?

Matthew HemphillJan 28, 2012

Rashad Evans was able to beat Phil Davis down tonight on the second UFC on FOX card and as long as he remains healthy, earned a title shot in the process.

This writer believed that he was taking Davis lightly and would get beaten in a close upset, but that didn't happen. For all of Evan's smack talk he showed that he was prepared for the man placed in front of him.

Evans was able to neutralize Davis's wrestling ability and was the superior fighter when it came to striking. Hindsight is 20/20 when looking back and now it seems obvious that Davis wasn't ready for the fight.

But Davis was a credible opponent and nothing should be taken away from his preparation or for any support he might have received. Evans did a great job in victory and is ready for his fight with light heavyweight champion Jon Jones.

Their grudge match will generate serious money for the UFC and get a lot of people to pay attention to the sport.

It just isn't the best fight that can be made.

Evans has beaten great opposition to get to the number one contender spot that he now holds, but MMA is a what have you done for me lately sport, and Evans hasn't done much. He was able to soundly beat Davis and he crushed Tito Ortiz a few months ago.

If there wasn't any other contenders to compete with Evans would be the easy choice for Jones's next opponent.

Except that Dan Henderson is also fighting at light heavyweight and his last fight was an incredible battle with Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. Henderson also has wins over Fedor Emelianenko and Rafael Cavalcante.

And at 41 he needs to get a title shot now or it may be too late.

He has had a great career, one better than Evan's so far, but the clock is going to strike midnight soon and he is one of the few men who can still test Jones ability as a champion. He has also made his case for a title match a little bit more definitively.

At least, he has by his body of work in the cage.

His talent to draw attention to a fight outside of it is still lacking and that is why he will most likely be passed up.

Its a shame because if anyone deserves the opportunity it is the former Pride champion.

He has the power to possibly take out Jones with his punches.

He is a former Olympian and a standout wrestler.

He is a veteran who has faced every challenger possible.

And he isn't going to make the UFC as much money as a fight withe Evans and Jones is.

So Evans will get the fight, but that doesn't mean he is a better choice then Henderson.

It just means that fans will have to hope that Henderson doesn't get old overnight.
