Giants vs. Patriots: Super Bowl 2012 Will Come Down to the Final Possession

Tony SantorsaJan 30, 2012

Over the past 10 seasons, five of the 10 Super Bowls have come down to the final possession. To continue on that note, nine of the last 10 Super Bowls were a one-score lead heading into the fourth quarter,

That's just to tell you how competitive the Super Bowl has been in recent history.

We all know by know that Super Bowl XLVI will be a rematch of Super Bowl XLII when the New York Giants upset the New England Patriots and ended their perfect undefeated season, 17-14.

The 2007 Giants and Patriots are certainly different from this year's version, but they're still similar and are pretty evenly matched.

Super Bowl XLVI will come down to the final possession—I guarantee it.

Back in Super Bowl XLII, Eli Manning threw the game-winning touchdown to Plaxico Burress with 35 seconds left and ultimately the Patriots were unable to move down the field in time as they had so little time to work with.

This year's Super Bowl is going to be competitive as ever.

Back in Week 9 of this season, the Giants and the Patriots met with New York coming out on top, 24-20.

Tom Brady led New England's offense down the field, as it was trailing 17-13, and Brady connected with Rob Gronkowski for a 14-yard touchdown to give the Patriots a 20-17.

Then again, much like Super Bowl XLII, Manning and the Giants marched down the field and tossed a touchdown pass to Jake Ballard with just 15 seconds left to ultimately win the game for New York, 24-20.

I firmly believe Super Bowl XLVI will come down to the final possession and I believe this year's Super Bowl will resemble Super Bowl XXXVIII when New England took on the Carolina Panthers and won in a shootout, 32-29.

Much like Super Bowl XXXVIII, this year's game will likely be a defensive battle in the first half—similar to Week 9—and then Brady and Manning will explode in the second half. Whoever has the ball last with enough time on the clock to work with will win Super Bowl XLVI.
