UFC on FOX 2: 10 Things You Need to Know About Rashad Evans
This Saturday night, former UFC light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans returns to the Octagon to face off against undefeated fighter and former NCAA champion wrestler Phil Davis.
This fight will be the main event of UFC on Fox 2, which is the first official event on Fox under the new deal.
Rashad has been in the UFC for quite a long time, since season 2 of The Ultimate Fighter, and was previously the light heavyweight champion.
Here are 10 things you need to know about Rashad Evans.
Has a Record of 16-1-1
1 of 10Rashad has one of the best records in MMA today, and he has several notable fighters on his hit list, including Chuck Liddell, "Rampage" Jackson and Tito Ortiz.
He Claims a Record of 21-1-1
2 of 10Although his official record is counted at 16-1-1, Evans—and the UFC—count two amateur bouts and three fights on The Ultimate Fighter.
Seeing as he won all of those, it's plain to see how you get 21-1-1.
Won The Ultimate Fighter 2
3 of 10As mentioned, Evans was featured on season 2 of The Ultimate Fighter.
Not only was he featured on the season, but he won it, winning decisions in all four fights on his way to the six-figure contract.
Fought at Heavyweight
4 of 10Did I forget to mention that he won season 2 of TUF as a heavyweight? Because he did.
Also, prior to becoming a cast member on TUF, he won the Gladiator Challenge Light Heavyweight tournament. So he moved up a weight class to get his shot in the UFC.
Former Light Heavyweight Champion
5 of 10Rashad Evans won the light heavyweight title when he defeated Forrest Griffin at UFC 92 in 2008.
Evans didn't hold the title for long, losing it to Lyoto Machida in his next fight.
Has Beaten Four Former Champions
6 of 10Rashad's illustrious career has seen him defeat four former UFC light heavyweight champions, including three finishes.
Those four fighters are Chuck Liddell (pictured left), Forrest Griffin, "Rampage" Jackson and Tito Ortiz.
The only one of those fighters to make it to a decision with Rashad was "Rampage" Jackson.
Has Several Highlight Reel Knockouts
7 of 10Evans' first real one-shot knockout came against Sean Salmon at UFC Fight Night 8, where he landed a brutal head kick on Salmon in the second round, and floored him.
He earned "Knockout of the Night" for that.
Then, the following year, he knocked out Chuck Liddell at UFC 88, for which he earned both "Knockout of the Night" and "Knockout of the Year."
Most recently, Rashad stopped Tito Ortiz with a knee to the solar plexus.
Was on the Receiving End of a Highlight Reel Knockout
8 of 10Whether his record is 16-1-1, or 21-1-1, or 100-1-1, he will always have that one loss.
That one loss came at the hands of Machida, in the fight where Rashad lost his light heavyweight title.
In a fan-favorite knockout, Machida finished Rashad with a flurry of strikes, from punches to kicks to knees.
The entire time that Machida was teeing off, Rashad looked as though he was laughing and trash talking Machida.
Then Machida landed one shot on the button, and put Rashad out cold.
Gets a Title Shot If He Wins and Is Injury Free After Next Fight
9 of 10Should Rashad win his next fight, and come out injury free, he will get the next shot at the light heavyweight title, and his former training partner, Jonny "Bones" Jones.
Fights Live and Free This Saturday on Fox
10 of 10This Saturday night, you can see Rashad fight live and free on Fox at 8 p.m. EST.
Also on the card are two middleweight matchups, featuring Chael Sonnen vs. Michael Bisping and Chris Weidman vs. Demian Maia.
