Super Bowl 2012: Which Defense Has the Edge?

Tim DanielsJan 27, 2012

It's no secret the New England Patriots and New York Giants can both score points in bunches. That's why this season's Super Bowl will ultimately be decided by which defense steps up to make more big plays, especially in the second half.

With that in mind, let's examine which team has the edge on that side of the ball.

Defensive Line

Vince Wilfork is the only Patriots defensive lineman playing up to his capabilities during the playoffs. Mark Anderson, who had 10 sacks during the regular season, hasn't been as effective over the last two weeks and must step up if New England is going to get enough pressure on Eli Manning.

The Giants have one of the most potent defensive lines in the entire league. A struggling pass rush hurt them early in the season, but the feared front has started dominating once again over the past month. Osi Umenyiora and Co. shouldn't have much trouble making a major impact.

This category clearly goes to the Giants.

Edge: Giants

Linebackers

Even though New England's defense was downright dreadful for most of the season, the team's linebackers are actually pretty solid. Rob Ninkovich is one of the most underrated players at the position in the league and Brandon Spikes has been a force in the postseason.

Chase Blackburn and Michael Boley have both outperformed expectations for the Giants, who suffered several injuries during the season. The group is brought down by Mathias Kiwanuka, though. He was expected to be a feared rusher coming out of college, but simply hasn't developed as New York hoped.

It's pretty close, but I lean toward the Patriots.

Edge: Patriots

Secondary

Kyle Arrington was a pleasant surprise in his third season with the Patriots. He intercepted seven passes, which was tied for the league lead, and had 88 tackles. Aside from him, however, New England lacks depth and playmakers to slow down a talented Giants offense.

It's a similar story for the G-Men. Corey Webster is a reliable veteran, but otherwise there are a lot of question marks for New York. The biggest problem the Giants have is finding somebody who can stick with Wes Welker, but I don't think they have anyone who can handle that task.

Both teams finished near the bottom of the league in pass defense, so neither team is a big winner here. That said, the Giants do have a minor advantage.

Edge: Giants

Verdict

So, there you have it. The Giants hold the defensive edge. As long as the front four can get consistent pressure on Brady so he doesn't become comfortable in the pocket, they will be in good shape. It's the same plan that led New York to a shocking upset four years ago.
