NFL Free Agents 2012: Packers' Matt Flynn Would Solve Dolphins QB Problems

Nicholas GossJan 26, 2012

The Miami Dolphins' search for a permanent solution at quarterback should begin and end with Green Bay Packers quarterback Matt Flynn, and according to teammate Aaron Rodgers, his backup could be headed to Florida this offseason.

"

"I think it's a strong possibility that [the Dolphins] would make a run at him," Rodgers said, the paper reports. "I think it kind of makes sense. Joe [Philbin] in that system, which I'm sure is going to be very similar to this system, and Matt having a great grasp of that and playing well in his recent opportunities. I think it would kind of make sense to bring Matt out there."

Philbin of course was the Packers' offensive coordinator this season and was recently hired by the Dolphins as their new head coach. Since Flynn already knows Philbin's offensive system, the transition from Green Bay to Miami should go smoothly if he joins the team.

Flynn is a free agent this offseason, and the Packers won't want to take up a lot of salary cap space on two quarterbacks.

Like many teams in the NFL, the Dolphins are probably a good quarterback away from being a perennial playoff contender.

Since Dan Marino retired after the 1999 season, the Dolphins have had 16 different starting quarterbacks. This lack of consistent quarterback play has resulted in just three playoff appearances since Marino's retirement, including one postseason win and one appearances since 2001.

Flynn is a very good quarterback who has made the most of his opportunities backing up Rodgers. He nearly beat Tom Brady and the New England Patriots on the road last year when Rodgers was hurt, and this season he beat the Detroit Lions in Week 17 with 480 passing yards and six touchdowns, both of which are franchise records.

Flynn has shown the ability to play consistently well at the NFL level, and his passing skills are quite good even when compared to many other starting quarterbacks.

With their first round pick at the bottom of the top 10 in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Dolphins likely won't have Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III fall to them, especially with the possibility that teams may trade ahead of Miami to draft the Heisman Trophy winner.

Flynn is a better option at quarterback for Miami than Griffin anyway. Griffin is a good player, and throws a fantastic deep ball, but he is unproven at the NFL level. He has great potential but also could struggle if his dual-threat passing/running skills don't translate too well to the next level. Those dual threat quarterback prospects sometimes come into the NFL and play well like Cam Newton and Michael Vick, but then there's those who don't like JaMarcus Russell.

Flynn is a safer and smarter option at quarterback for the Dolphins going forward. He's proven himself in the pros, he knows their new head coach very well, and he's only 26 years old.

The Dolphins struggled last season but finished 6-3 after starting off 0-7. With an upgrade at quarterback they would certainly have a good shot at making an AFC wild card berth for the next few seasons.

Flynn is a wonderful talent, and the Dolphins would be foolish not to acquire him this offseason to solve their quarterback woes.
