Kevin Love, Timberwolves Reportedly Agree on Contract Extension
Kevin Love has decided to show that he likes what is going on in Minnesota by reportedly agreeing to a four-year contract extension with the Timberwolves, according to Chris Broussard of ESPN.
The exact amount of the deal is not known, though it is believed to be worth more than $60 million. It also includes an opt-out clause before the final year.
The maximum extension for Love does not come as a surprise. He has established himself as one of the best power forwards in the NBA over the last two seasons. He is a double-double machine, and is going to be a big part of the rebuilding effort going on in Minnesota.
What It Means
This deal ensures that Love will be around long enough to see the Timberwolves add more talent around him in order to make a playoff push.
Of course, the opt-out clause after three years forces the front office to speed up the process. He wanted the option in there in case the team isn't able to turn things around, which would allow him to head into free agency at age 27.
The addition of Ricky Rubio, who has been a pleasant surprise at the point guard position, has given the team an outside presence to ease the pressure on Love.
What Happens Next
General manager David Kahn has his work cut out for him. The team has improved this season, but they are still not one of the top teams in the Western Conference.
Love and Rubio form a great inside-outside combination. However, they are going to need more support to become a playoff threat year in and year out. The draft is going to play a big role in determining how long Love stays with this team.
Things are looking up in Minnesota right now, but the front office will have to surround Love with a great team in order to keep him in the fold for all four years.
