USC Recruiting 2012: Will WR Darreus Rogers Switch to ASU After Latest Visit?

Randy ChambersJun 4, 2018

National Signing Day is quickly approaching and while players are wrapping up their final visits, coaches are making their final pitches to try to sell their program to them. Meanwhile, fans and students sit in the background and hope their school lands a few of these top players.

One of the top committed recruits at the wide receiver position is Darreus Rogers. He committed to the USC Trojans about a year ago, but may be having second thoughts about where he would like to play football during his college days.

A team that is quietly making an impact on the 6'2", 192-pound wideout is Arizona State, which is a school he just came back from.

“It was a really good trip,” explained Rogers. “I checked out the depth chart and learned more about their academics, which is what I really like about their program. Like at USC, they give you special attention and help you to be successful in school.”

Arizona State has always been ranked really solid from an academic standpoint and has several different programs to offer him. However, Rogers wasn't just interested in the books, he was also very impressed with the coaching staff that Arizona State has. Of course, they recently hired former Pittsburgh Panthers head coach Todd Graham.

“I really like their entire coaching staff. Especially, the wide receivers coach DelVaughn Alexander, he is great and head coach Todd Graham is wonderful. Their offensive coordinator, Mike Norvell is awesome. He is always really excited about everything,” said Rogers.

Despite how he may feel about the Sun Devils, he also managed to mention the Trojans and said they are still the favorites in the race for his services.

“USC is still my number one right now, but I am just going over things with my family,” said Rogers.

What Rogers said about Arizona State isn't really a surprise. I'm not sure any recruit in the country has ever said he hated the school they just visited. They always have wonderful things to say about the coaching staff, the program and the players on the current depth chart. That being said, Arizona State does have great offensive coaches that know how to get the most out of their players.

Arizona State ranked 10th in the country last year in passing yards and averaged over 33 points per game. Those type of numbers have to be appealing to somebody like Rogers. He'd also have the opportunity to start right away with receivers like Aaron Pflugrad and Gerell Robinson on their way out. The Sun Devils are also still in the running for wide receiver Bryce Treggs, who would be another weapon added to this effective scoring offense.

You have to still give the edge to USC. After all, they are the team he is committed to, they do have a program that's ready to win right now and they have overall better talent from top to bottom. However, any competition you may have has to make you a little nervous when you're trying to land top talent.

Rogers will receive in-home visits from both programs later this week and will likely make his final decision on National Signing Day.
