Why This Version of the Miami Heat Will Never Win an NBA Title

Richard LangfordJun 7, 2018

When LeBron James maniacally professed the Heat would win "not one, not two, not three" championships, he was right. They aren't going to win any—at least not with this current group of stars.

There are a few fatal flaws with the blueprint of this team, and the sooner Pat Riley and the Heat realize this the sooner they can go about fixing it. And make no mistake, those flaws are there.

Incomplete Nature of the Big Three

At first glance, this is a match made in heaven. They have a shooting guard, small forward and a power forward. That should be the basis of a complete and versatile foundation to any team. The problem is, though, that Chris Bosh plays like a small forward.

Bosh doesn't have a post game, he is not a great rebounder and he gets pushed around on defense by more physical players.

He prefers to get his points with mid-range jumpers and open dunks. And while his defense has improved, he is far from a lockdown defender.

That is all well and good for a team that is built around Bosh, but not so good for this Heat team. Miami would be far better served to have a big man that also has a post move or two.

That would bring them an added dimension and help them work out of slumps when they get bogged down. This is a problem that will be more apparent in the playoffs than the regular season.

With the increased defensive intensity and time to implement detailed opponent specific game plans, the Heat will be left to watch teams make adjustments while they deal with their limited options. Not only is the Big Three incomplete, but so is the talent around them.

With the amount of money tied up in Wade, James and Bosh, that is not likely to change.

LeBron and the Big Choke

If NBA games were only three quarters long, this Heat squad would have won the championship last year.

James' history of disappearing late in games is alarming. He has made it clear that he cannot be counted on in big-game situations. This is a problem.

This team is reliant upon the Big Three to succeed. They don't have enough weapons to accomplish greatness without all of them succeeding.

This problem is amplified by the above mentioned lack of a post presence, and it will doom every sniff and whiff of the championship this team gets.
