WWE News: WWE Reportedly Toning Down Twitter Promotion on Raw and Smackdown

Drake OzJan 25, 2012

In 2011, Vince McMahon launched a major initiative to promote Twitter at all costs.

Twitter became just as prevalent on WWE programming as the superstars themselves. It was worked into storylines and promos, pushed endlessly by Michael Cole and so on and so forth.

The WWE’s constant promotion of Twitter was met with mixed reaction, as some thought it was brilliant marketing while others thought it was just too much to handle.

Well, I’ve got some got news for anyone who falls into that second group: It looks like the days of the WWE shoving Twitter down our throats are over.

"

As you may have noticed during this past weeks episode of RAW, WWE didn't speak at all about Twitter. The only promoting of Twitter was the graphics that appeared on the screen of trending topics. F4Wonline.com is reporting that word coming from backstage is that WWE has had a change of heart and is pulling back on the heavy promotion of Twitter.

"

Hallelujah! There's a wrestling god after all, and I’m not talking about JBL.

Good lord, I absolutely hated the WWE’s obsession with Twitter, and I’ve been pleased with the way the company has toned it down over the past few weeks.

I no longer feel like I’m being bombarded with references to Twitter, tweets and trends. Instead, I feel like Twitter is being used just how it should be—minimally.

I’m fine with seeing mentions of Twitter here and there, but I never quite understood why Vince was so in love with the social network site in the first place. It's (pun intended) nothing more than a trend, and it’s not something the company should build storylines or its future around.

Sure, showing the Superstars’ Twitter handles when they make their ring entrances is harmless. However, incorporating tweets into storylines is absolutely ridiculous and adds virtually nothing to the WWE product.

When two guys are feuding, we don’t want to see them talk crap on Twitter. We want to see them beat the holy hell out of each other in the ring.

Now that the WWE is scaling back its push of Twitter, that should be exactly what happens.

I'm now on Twitter and Formspring, so you can follow me or ask me anything wrestling-related!
