Ken Griffey Jr.'s Son Trey Commits to Arizona Football

Randy ChambersJun 7, 2018

As the recruiting process is heating up, players from all over the country are wrapping up their final official visits and are preparing to make a decision that will affect the rest of their lives. And the fans are hoping that at least some of those players will end up on their favorite team.

While most are only paying attention to the top players in the country and the recruits who will make an immediate impact on their team. Arizona did pick up a player who has a pretty talented bloodline and if he plays this sport anything like his father played baseball, the Wildcats are in for a treat.

I'm talking about Trey Griffey committing to Arizona. Yes, his father is Ken Griffey Jr., the same guy who finished his 22-year career with 630 home runs and over 2,700 hits. The same guy who won 10 Gold Gloves, MVP of the league in 1997 and comeback player of the year in 2005. I'm talking about the same Ken Griffey who would have competed for the home-run title if he would have stayed healthy the last five years or so.

Griffey is a very athletic player who really doesn't have a set position. He'll likely either play the safety position or wide receiver. He's 6'2", 190 pounds and has great leaping skills. He runs excellent routes and has good hands to where he can catch well in traffic too.

He recently made his decision and despite having offers from several schools in the country, including Arizona State and Iowa State, he went with Arizona.

“I feel great … it was basically just the atmosphere and I loved everything about it,” Trey Griffey said late Monday. “It was just a great, enjoyable trip to Tucson.”

Putting somebody as athletic as Griffey in head coach Rich Rodriguez's offensive system could mean big things for him. He'll find creative ways to use him and get the most out of him, in ways many coaches wouldn't have been able to.

This may not be a big commitment, but it is one that's pretty cool. How many other schools have the son of a legend on their team?
