UFC on Fox 2: Predictions for Fight, Submission and Knockout of the Night
The UFC returns this weekend with a three-fight televised card on Fox Saturday night, and after some last-minute changes, the light-heavyweight and middleweight divisions will have new title contenders emerge from the bouts that feature top contenders like Chael Sonnen, Rashad Evans and Michael Bisping.
In the main event, former UFC light-heavyweight champion Rashad Evans will take on undefeated fighter Phil "Mr. Wonderful" Davis.
Evans is 16-1 in his MMA career while Davis is 9-0 and on a five-fight win streak in the UFC. If Evans wins, he will face former training partner and reigning light-heavyweight champion Jon "Bones" Jones.
Also on the card, Michael Bisping will face former middleweight title challenger Chael Sonnen. The winner of this fight will take on UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva.
The third fight will feature Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace Demian Maia going up against wrestling standout Chris Weidman.
Fighters that will appear on the undercard include Evan Dunham, Mike Russow, George Roop, Joey Beltran and Charles Oliveira.
These are predictions for fight, submission and knockout of the night.
Fight of the Night: Michael Bisping vs. Chael Sonnen
Even though there wasn't much time to hype up the middleweight contender bout between Michael Bisping and Chael Sonnen, fans know what they get when these two enter the cage.
Both are equally determined, and with a title shot on the line, they will do everything they can to walk away with the victory Saturday night.
Sonnen enters as the favorite, but Bisping has been more active as of late, defeating four opponents in a row, including Jason Miller, Jorge Rivera, Yoshihiro Akiyama and Dan Miller. Sonnen has only fought once since his unsuccessful title fight in August 2010.
There shouldn't be a dull moment in this fight for however long it goes. Both are relentless and have excellent cardio. Bisping is great at scrambling back to his feet when he gets taken down, and he has a pace that wears down almost all of his opponents, even if he is on the defensive most of the time. The same can be said for Sonnen.
This fight will end up a lot closer than most people expect it to be, and that's what will make it the fight of the night.
Submission of the Night: Charles Oliveira
Charles Oliveira will make his featherweight debut against UFC newcomer Eric "Little Lee" Wiseley on the Fuel TV undercard.
Currently on a winless streak over three bouts against elite competition, Oliveira needs to get back to his winning ways and do so in exciting fashion. He was stopped by both Donald Cerrone and Jim Miller.
With a brown belt in BJJ, Oliveira has obtained seven submission wins over 17 fights, including standout victories over Efrain Escudero and Darren Elkins.
Lee's record is 19-6 overall with all of his losses having come by decision. He holds two wins over former UFC lightweight title challenger Hermes Franca and a victory over former UFC fighter Matt Veach.
Oliveira needs to do more than just win here, and that will be what drives him to get the finish late in the fight.
Knockout of the Night: Joey Beltran
In what should be a back-and-forth war, the undercard bout between heavyweight sluggers Joey Beltran and Lavar Johnson promises to have only one man standing when it's over.
Both of these guys are tough as nails, and neither is ever in a boring fight. Between them, 24 of their 28 victories have come by knockout, and only Johnson has one knockout loss, which came in his professional debut after his corner stopped the fight in-between rounds.
Beltran has shown his granite chin in the past, and that may be what wins him this fight. Johnson is currently riding a two-fight losing streak from his five-fight stint in Strikeforce, so expect to see him leave it all in the cage, win or lose.
If you want to know just how tough Johnson is, his story from outside the cage shows it. The "Black Superman" was shot during an Independence Day celebration in 2009, which left him in critical condition. He returned less than a year later to earn an 18-second knockout win over Carl Seumanutafa and would go on to knock out his next two opponents.
