WWE Royal Rumble 2012: CM Punk and Dolph Ziggler Will Steal Show

Adam WellsJun 7, 2018

WWE has given little promotion to any match at this year's Royal Rumble pay-per-view, hoping that fans will buy it solely based on the name of the event.

For all of its problems creatively, there is a five-star match waiting to happen between WWE Champion CM Punk and Dolph Ziggler.

Ziggler has emerged as one of the best workers in WWE, yet the company has decided to build this match around Punk and John Laurinaitis for reasons known only to them.

Despite the terrible promotion for the match, there is no reason to think that Ziggler and Punk won't work a fantastic match.

Ignoring Laurnaitis' role in this match as special referee—because it is likely going to hinder the actual outcome—this is going to be poetry in motion when it is just Punk and Ziggler standing toe-to-toe.

We all know what Punk is capable of.

He got a great match out of John Cena at the Money In the Bank show last July, which is no small feat. He has been on a roll since his breakout performance over the summer, and no one can match his all-around work in WWE right now.

Ziggler has been successful, despite his push.

He is finally being given the chance that most fans feel he deserves, even though it is only happening because the Rumble match is going to sell the pay-per-view and not because of a sign that he is going to be in main events now.

No one has been as smooth in the ring as Ziggler over the last three months.

He has actually been given time to put on great matches on television and at pay-per-views, and his performance in this match is going to set the tone for what happens to him the rest of this year.

Despite that, Ziggler and Punk have almost no pressure on them because the Rumble is the main event. More often than not, there is one great undercard match on this show, and it is obvious what it will be on this year's show.

Even if the result of the match is obvious—Punk retains—the way that they get there is going to be special.

As long as they are given the time required to put on a great match, there is no reason to think that these two won't deliver on the big stage.
