Stefon Diggs: 3 Reasons He's a Perfect Fit for the Florida Gators
With the college football recruiting process heating up, players are wrapping up their last visits and trying to make a decision that will change the rest of their lives forever.
Wide receiver Stefon Diggs is one of those players who's still trying to make that decision. While the speedster wideout has offers from nearly every top school in the country, it appears that the Florida Gators are the front-runner for his services. He's visited the program three times and has really enjoyed himself each time. He still has visits lined up with schools like Maryland and Ohio State, but the Gators seem to be the team to beat at this point.
Here are a few reasons why he's perfect for that team out in Gainesville.
Contribute Right Away
1 of 3The Florida Gators weren't exactly the best passing team in the country last season. A lot of that had to do with the lack of talent at the quarterback position, but not having many weapons at wide receiver also played a part. Diggs could come in and play quality minutes right away, especially with the loss of Deonte Thompson.
Diggs isn't exactly a true No. 1 wide receiver. He has a small frame and is more of the receiver type that will help stretch the field with his speed and make things easier for his teammates. With young options like Quinton Dunbar and Andre Debose, this offense could get a much-needed spark on offense with the addition of this speedster.
There, of course, is still questions at quarterback, but the more weapons an offense has, the easier the transition will be.
Explosive Plays on Special Teams
2 of 3Florida was great on kick returns last season, but despite having one of the fastest guys in the country in Chris Rainey, their punt return coverage was terrible. Sure, they returned two punts for touchdowns last season, but they only managed to average seven yards on punt returns for the year. That was good for ninth in the SEC and 77th in the country.
Now that Rainey is no longer on the team, Diggs could step in and contribute with his speed. All you have to do is watch the video and you can see this kids potential when he gets the ball in his hands. He's a threat to take it the distance every time he touches the ball, and when he gets in the open field, watch out.
Something tells me he's going to make a lot of highlight reels on Saturdays.
Could Be the Missing Piece
3 of 3I know the Florida Gators didn't look good at all last year. They struggled to score points and nearly lost to Furman before waking up in the fourth quarter. I also know they need to find a quarterback who can lead this team and play consistent.
But if there's one thing that this team has going for them, it's talent. Don't ever underestimate the amount of talent that this program brings in year in and year out. This is a defense that gave up less than three touchdowns a game last season and are absolutely loaded on that side of the ball in this recruiting class.
On offense, they may be losing their two-headed monster at running back, but they have landed two top tight ends and a solid running back prospect in Matt Jones. Adding Diggs may not exactly put this team over the top, but it will be a great addition and another step in the right direction.
With Will Muschamp heading into his second year and a solid offensive coordinator in Brent Pease calling the plays, the nucleus is there to succeed. It really won't be long before this team is once again competing for national championships.
