Why Arkansas Shouldn't Get Its Hopes Up About 5-Star RB Trey Williams Visit

Randy ChambersJan 23, 2012

As we inch closer and closer to National Signing Day, the recruiting process is heating up. There are still tons of top players out there who are still undecided and then there are the players who have already committed to their program.

And then there are players who have committed to a school, but are still visiting with others, just to make sure they're making the right decision.

Running back Trey Williams is one of those players who has decided which school he'd like to play for, but still has a few visits lined up as well.

He's rated as one of the top running backs in this year's class and he's originally committed to Texas A&M, although he did recently visit with Arkansas last weekend and has a visit lined up with Oklahoma State as well.

While Razorback fans should be excited that one of the top recruits in the country is excited about the possibility of playing for their school, they shouldn't get their hopes up.

Arkansas does have a lot to offer and has produced several top running backs in years past. But if Williams wants to see quality minutes right away, he'd stay with his commitment to the Aggies. The Razorbacks will have Knile Davis back next season, who will without question be the starter next year. They also already have commitments from three running backs in this class, including a solid back in Jonathan Williams.

The Aggies are losing top back in Cyrus Gray who rushed for over 1,000 yards the last two seasons. Backup running back Christine Michael will be a senior next season as well. Williams has a great chance to see the field quite a bit next season and take over as the full-time starter as early as his sophomore season.

He's also from the state of Texas, which does give the Aggies the home-field advantage in what appears to be a two-team race. And with Texas A&M joining the SEC next season, the Razorbacks can no longer play the better conference card to steal top recruits—at least not in this situation.

The Razorbacks have already stolen two top prospects from the state of Texas in Jonathan Williams and Will Hines. Both of them were considering Missouri. But it would really be surprising if Williams ends up with any school other than Texas A&M.

"

"I think Coach Sumlin is a pretty cool guy and he’s real," Williams said. "There are not too many real coaches that are just flat out dead serious with you. I had a great time with the recruits up there because I knew everybody. That was pretty cool."

"

If Arkansas is able to pull this commitment off and land wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham, they'd have one of the most explosive offenses in the country. It's just difficult seeing him leave the school he is currently committed to for Arkansas at this point in the process.
