January Transfer Window: 6 Clubs That Still Must Spend

Sam TigheJun 7, 2018

The end of January is fast approaching and to be quite honest, it's been disappointing.

With less than £40 million spent by English Premier League clubs, January is yet to heat up.

Does this mean that clubs don't need to reinforce? Not in the slightest.

Here are six clubs that definitely need to reach into their pockets and invest over the remaining few days.

Queens Park Rangers

1 of 6

Having just secured a new manager and a first win in what seems like forever, Queens Park Rangers will be looking to kick on from here and secure English Premier League survival.

QPR need to recruit a few more Premier League-quality players if they want to guarantee survival and they've certainly started proceedings.

Nedum Onuoha, Taye Taiwo and Alex seem days away from signingthree acquisitions that would do nothing but boost their chances of remaining in England's top flight.

Wigan Athletic

2 of 6

Every season Wigan sign unheard-of players and every one deems them fit for relegation.

But somehow, they've stuck around year after year. They play nice football in parts but ultimately they lack the cutting edge or the consistency over 38 games to take the next step.

They need to sign a few established players to secure survival this year and reinforcing the right areas is a must. The defence is suspect and the strikers are misfiring.

At least they have Ali Al-Habsi.

Blackburn Rovers

3 of 6

The January transfer window has been dominated by stories regarding Christopher Samba edging towards the exit door.

A transfer request has been rejected and Steve Kean says he's staying. That's not the last we'll hear of it.

Now Mauro Formica looks set to be off and some reports claim Scott Dann is possibly on his way too.

Blackburn Rovers have to get a move on in the transfer window but they shouldn't be in the position they are. The team are underperforming.

The current personnel should see Rovers clear of relegation. Perhaps it's a managerial change they need the most?

Bolton Wanderers

Losing Gary Cahill resulted in a 3-1 win over Liverpool. Hands up if you predicted that one.

Over the course of the rest of the season, however, things won't pan out the same as they did this weekend.

Reports that Tim Ream has signed subject to a work permit is good news, but should be met with caution. Any signing to get Zat Knight off the field of play is a good signing but there's no guarantee he'll meet the standards.

Bolton do need to bring in a few more players as the injuries to Stuart Holden and Chung-yong Lee have crippled their creative instinct.

Aston Villa

5 of 6

Aston Villa beat Wolves this weekend in one of the Midlands derbiesa massive result for the claret-and-blue side.

New loan signing Robbie Keane looked sharp and took both his goals superbly. It just meant that by the end of the game, Villa fans wished Keane was signing on a permanent basis.

Picking up relative rookie Enda Stevens from Shamrock Rovers isn't enough for Aston Villa this month in regards to permanent deals and while Villa don't have much in terms of cash, they need to find a deal from somewhere.

Arsenal

6 of 6

Arsenal have lost three on the bounce—it's not very often we've been able to say that during Arsene Wenger's reign.

The truth is that some of the players they have just aren't of sufficient quality. The money is there to make some improvements and it needs to be spent.

The Gunners are in serious danger of not making the UEFA Champions League next season whilst being usurped by Tottenham as the No. 1 North London club.
