WWE: 8 Reasons John Cena Will Never Turn Heel, Whether You Like It or Not

David LevinMay 31, 2018

We see the rage in the expressions on his face. We see the constant battle between good and evil. We even see a change in his demeanor, his talk, his attitude and his dress (black is much more slimming).

But not matter what we think, there will not be a "heel" turn anytime soon for one John Cena.

Now, for a moment of silence.

While the WWE Universe and the IWC would love to see some kind of change in the character we have grown to cheer and hate at the same time (we also did that for Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage), it may never happen. The flirtation is the storyline, not what happens after the change takes place.

And for those of us who remember older storylines and plots that lasted a while before they were revealed (The Black Scorpion, Midnight Rider, The Big Yellow Dog) this is one storyline we could see going for some time and really create some heat.

But in the end, these are the reasons John Cena will never change his stripes.

Timing

1 of 8

He has been in the WWE for the past 10 years. He has played the part of heel before, but when he put on the Red or Orange or Purple, it meant he was embracing the fans and making his own stand.

Cena has never wavered in the fact there are a band of fans who will always boo him, and he accepts that.

But to the millions who cheer him, he takes that seriously. If he did not take it seriously, he would have changed his stripes long ago.

Hulk Hogan

While CM Punk is Randy Savage and Chris Jericho is Roddy Piper, John Cena is the closest thing to a Hulk Hogan the WWE has ever had.

And with that, Vince McMahon has another cash cow.

Cena is a merchandising miracle. He's a media dream, and he stands to lose some of that "flare" by changing sides.

CM Punk

As odd as this sounds, at some point, I expect CM Punk to make another character jump and turn heel again.

It may not happen for a while, but I think it happens.

While fans would cheer Cena's heel turn, they would more readily accept Punk in the same role because he's more believable.

After Kane, Who's Next?

4 of 8

Kane is helping this story along pretty well. But at 44, I don't see him and Cena going at it for the next decade.

Who's next?

Can you see Cena in a feud with Ryder? What about Randy Orton? Sheamus, maybe.

But there are not many who I can see work a long angle.

The Miz works if he changes sides. R-Truth works, maybe someone who comes in from FCW.

When Cena Speaks, We All Listen

5 of 8

There's no "attitude" in him. He's a good speaker, good wrestler and a mark of what the WWE really wants to be right now.

If he were trying to create another brand of wrestling, then people would stand up and take notice.

No one is doing that either.

Who Takes His Place?

6 of 8

CM Punk has appeal.

Kane and Undertaker have appeal but are at the end of their careers. Rey Mysterio is injury-prone. The Miz could turn face and do this, but it's unlikely.

There's no one to step in and take Cena's place. And the thought of Zack Ryder taking over as the lead face of Raw scares the hell out of me.

Could He Make the Switch Back?

7 of 8

As odd as this seems, what happens if the "heel" turn does not work?

Could fans accept him as a face again and love him just as much?

Could the WWE recover from the idea of a mistake, which could be huge?

It's One of Those Things That the WWE Does Not Want

8 of 8

Remember, creative and management work to find the best angles to work with.

And ultimately, they have the final say in who does what.

If the WWE does not want to lose their lead dog, then this will not happen.

It's a huge gamble. Hulk Hogan joining the nWo in WCW was stroke of genius.

Not all ideas like that have the same effect. The creative team back then got lucky.

They may not have the same luck this time around.
