Indianapolis Colts Taking Bulldozer to Organization; When Will They See Results?

Ryan PhillipsJun 7, 2018

The Indianapolis Colts today continued their makeover after a 2-14 season as the franchise announced it was letting go of its entire staff and that the team's building is being emptied out. We all should have expected this to be coming after such a terrible year, but giving the team a makeover won't make things better in the short-term.

The Colts' changes will really come to a head when they decide what to do with quarterback Peyton Manning, but at this point it is fairly clear that Indianapolis wants things to be drastically different from what happened this season.

The problem with making such huge changes is that the Colts will essentially be hitting the reset button on the organization. A completely new staff will mean completely new systems on both sides of the ball and new ways of doing things behind the scenes as well. Even if the Colts return a lot of their veterans, there is no guarantee that the transition to a new regime will be smooth.

Clearly owner Jim Irsay has to be aware of all of those factors, so at this point we would have to assume that he sees this as a full-scale rebuilding project. While that is understandable after such a terrible season, Colts fans should brace for a lean year or two while the team gets things in order.

Full-scale rebuilding in the NFL generally takes at least two seasons as teams use the draft to bring in players who fit the new system and make over their rosters with youth. The Colts badly need a roster makeover and are desperately in need of young, talented players.

With the announcement that Indianapolis will be dumping its entire staff, we should all expect the franchise to clearly head into the long process of fixing the team from the bottom up.
