5 Possible Pairings to Revitalize the WWE Tag Team Division
WWE's tag team division was thin before Evan Bourne’s suspension effectively ended Air Boom, but now it's barely existent. Fresh blood is sorely needed.
Who are Epico and Primo going to even defend the title against?
Like the Divas division, the tag teams suffer from a constricted roster. It's Epico and Primo, the Usos and nobody else, really. The Usos are talented and highly watchable, but you certainly can't build a division around just two teams.
Perhaps the answer is finding a pairing for singles wrestlers who currently aren't going anywhere. Sometimes it's the right gimmick and the right team that can make a wrestler's career.
Where would Smash have been without Demolition, or Road Dogg without the New Age Outlaws?
Some of these guys are on different shows, but that can easily be remedied.
Ezekiel Jackson and Brodus Clay
1 of 6Team Name: Funk Inc.
At the very least, these two guys will look intimidating, Brodus Clay's gyrations aside. Any number of double-team power moves could serve as their finisher.
At first, Ezekiel Jackson would join in on the Funkasaurus fun, dancing and smiling right along with his partner.
As the weeks progress, it'll be clear that Clay is more out there to have fun than to win, and some of his antics cost or almost cost Funk Inc. some victories.
This could lead to either the obvious former-teammates-become-enemies angle or just a team that is always brimming with contention. Like brothers who fight all the time, they get along when they have to, but they have their spats as well.
Hunico and JTG
2 of 6Team Name: The Dropkick Mafia
Hunico is lost now that his Sin Cara feud is over. JTG has faded out of the spotlight without Shad Gaspard.
Two gangsters drifting in obscurity could make the perfect pairing.
Hunico and JTG could both be bursting with bravado and play hardened, brash men who care more about fighting than winning. They constantly get disqualified and have to be reprimanded by either Teddy Long or John Laurinaitis.
Depending on how toned-down they want to go, the team name could be something a little tougher like The Cartel.
Fast-paced matches and a devil-may-care attitude from the Dropkick Mafia could help bolster the division.
Tyson Kidd and Ted DiBiase
3 of 6Team Name: Love and Money
Both Tyson Kidd and Ted DiBiase have worked the second generation angle and have worked in tag teams before.
Both have great potential and are highly athletic, but in the end, they haven't done much of anything in WWE.
Is this a rehashing of the Next Generation Hart Foundation? It could easily head that way, but with a little creativity, there's an opportunity for something new here.
First, suit them up in snappy matching outfits, combining the pink hearts of Kidd's gear with DiBiase's money signs.
Their personas could be built on all the basic tenets of being a good guy: honor, integrity, etc. Love and Money refuse to take short cuts in matches, take on all challengers and show all of their opponents respect.
Of course, this will all have to wait until DiBiase's injuries heal.
Drew McIntyre and Jinder Mahal
4 of 6Team Name: Cutthroat Kings
Both Jinder Mahal and Drew McIntyre separately begin to spout off about their respective royal lineages.
They soon join forces, disgusted with all the peons and low-class denizens of the WWE roster.
I'm certainly not suggesting that they start wearing crowns and capes from the high school theater closet. We're way beyond the bluntly obvious gimmick days.
They'd just carry themselves in a self-important way, look down on their opponents and draw heat by demeaning every audience they perform in front of.
The Cutthroat Kings' goal would be to take over WWE and become its co-rulers.
Mahal has been hampered by WWE's insistence that every Indian or Middle Eastern wrestler's persona not be anything beyond his nationality.
He gets a chance with this angle to develop a personality and motivation.
Tyler Reks and Mason Ryan
5 of 6Team Name: Sons of the Dark
Heavy metal, bad attitudes and butt-kicking would be the trademarks of this team.
I imagine them as brooding, defiant bad boys, whose No. 1 priority is to destroy their opponents. They could talk about how soft WWE has gotten over the years, even shooting on the PG era.
Of course, Mason Ryan would have to revert back to heel status, but that's a far better fit for him anyway.
WWE could turn up the eerie factor on the team's persona as little or as much as it would like.
Tyler Reks has been an intriguing, underutilized character. Mason Ryan has been directionless. Pairing them together and adding a loud-mouthed creepy manager (Paul Bearer?) could be beneficial to both men as well as the tag team division itself.
Men Still Without a Team
6 of 6Even if all five teams I suggested were put together, several men would reside in no-man's land.
Are there any potential new teammates for Kofi Kingston out there?
Are they are any perfect pairs to be made from these guys?
Alex Riley, Curt Hawkins, Justin Gabriel, Yoshi Tatsu, Trent Barreta, Johnny Curtis and Heath Slater. Do they need a team, a new gimmick or a move to another promotion to get jumpstarted?
