Knicks Rumors: Is NY Prepared to Go After Steve Nash This Summer?

Alex KayJun 7, 2018

The New York Knicks play the Phoenix Suns tonight and will be getting a first-hand look at one of the best point guards in the game.

That PG, of course, is Steve Nash, who will be 38 years old next season and becomes an unrestricted free agent at the end of the current one.

He has yet to win a ring in his career and, should he choose remain on a quest to hoist the O’Brien Trophy, could do a lot worse than reuniting with his former coach, Mike D'Antoni and teammate, Amar'e Stoudemire.

Brian Lewis of The New York Post is reporting that the Knicks are going to be taking a long, hard look at Nash this summer and are considering giving him the $5 million mid-level exception to chase a title in 2012-13.

Nash has had an illustrious career, highlighted by back-to-back MVP awards in 2004-05 and 2005-06. He’s one of the best passers the game has ever seen and has consistently led the Suns on deep playoff runs despite being undermanned.

With the championship window in Phoenix obviously closed (just take a look at the current roster), Nash has got to be on his way out of the desert, despite how kind they have been to him over the years.

He’s been lucky to play in the NBA for 15-plus seasons now, and it would cement his status as one of the best to ever play the position if he were to end his run with a ring.

The Knicks have a roster ready to compete for a championship with one glaring exception. They have absolutely no valuable point guards who can move the ball and run the offense.

Iman Shumpert and Toney Douglas are both 2-guards playing out of position, Mike Bibby is a washed up bum and Baron Davis has not been the same player he was during his youthful days in years.

Nash has been as consistent as they come, even with his minutes dwindling as his body starts to fail him, and is averaging a solid 14.2 points and 10 assists during 30.3 minutes he plays a game.

He would be the perfect fit in New York and knows how to run a Mike D’Antoni-coached offense, a system in which he found the most success and won MVP awards.

Nash also knows how to get Amar’e more involved on offense and will find Carmelo Anthony in position to make easy buckets.

It’s a win-win situation for both parties and the Knicks need to offer Nash a deal this summer when he becomes available.
