Super Bowl 2012: Why NFL Is Praying for New England Patriots vs. New York Giants

Donald WoodJan 18, 2012

While the NFL really wanted a Green Bay Packers vs. New England Patriots Super Bowl, life doesn’t always go as planned.

That’s where the New York Giants come in.

In what could be the most anticipated Super Bowl rematch in history, the Patriots will look to avenge their Super Bowl XLII loss to the Giants, which destroyed their perfect season. The New England entered that game 18-0 and were one of the most heavily favored teams in history.

After the 17-14 loss to the Giants, the Patriots lost many veteran players and have not reached the same level of excellence since. The same can be said for New York.

With the obvious difference of New England coming in with three losses, this potential rematch all the same feelings as the first game. No one will be underestimating Eli Manning and the Giants this time, however.

If Manning can will New York past the red hot 49ers in the NFC Championship game, it will be back to the biggest stage in the business for Round 2. While San Francisco is tough, their inexperience in the big games, from head coach to star middle linebacker and quarterback, will cost them enough to let the Giants squeeze out a win.

What about the Patriots?

After dismantling the Denver Broncos with the precision and thoroughness of an evil surgeon, Tom Brady and the Patriots move on to a Baltimore Ravens team that is very good but not quite as talented as New England. I fully expect Brady to ruin the aging Ravens defense with his rifle arm and sent the team home with a big L.

So why does the NFL want this so bad?

Just like in boxing or MMA, people love rematches. And unlike the BCS title game this season, though, this is one that people really do want to see. With the matchup being so amazing last time, people won't be able to help but be curious about the second installment of this battle and compare it to the first.

It's obvious that no matter how good the game is, there can never be an outcome as wild as what we had in 2008. We can only hope that both teams bring everything they have and make it a 45-43 Super Bowl fireworks display.

I know I want to see this matchup more than any other, even though I hate both teams. Imagine how much normal NFL fans want to see this!
