National Signing Day 2012: Dorial Green-Beckham Remains a Rare Catch
We're getting closer and closer to National Signing Day, and that means we're getting closer and closer to finding out where the nation's top recruit is going to be playing his college ball.
We're talking, of course, about Dorial Green-Beckham, the phenom wide receiver from Springfield, Missouri. He's a rare specimen, and the general consensus is that he will be a superstar wherever he ends up.
For now, Green-Beckham remains the No. 1 recruit in the country. At least according to Rivals.com, which has the Hillcrest High School star at the very top of its updated Top 100 rankings.
Green-Beckham's name has been a fixture atop Rivals' rankings, but there was a sense of doubt surrounding him in the last week or so. He had to go up against top-shelf competition at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, and his performance was a mixed bag.
On the one hand, he pulled down a spectacular 79-yard touchdown catch that effectively showed off why he is so highly sought after. On the other hand, he dropped a couple of easy catches, proving that the nation's top recruit is human after all.
Here's how Rivals analyst Adam Gorney characterized Green-Beckham's showing at the Army Bowl:
"Army week could have silenced all doubters—it didn't—that Green-Beckham is the best high school player in the country. But the 6'6'', 220-pound wide receiver from Springfield (Mo.) Hillcrest also could have crashed and burned—and he didn't.
By most estimations, Green-Beckham landed somewhere in the middle.
"
Evidently, Green-Beckham's performance didn't send up enough red flags to warrant a move down the rankings. If nothing else, that's a sign that his reputation is set in stone. It may simply be too late for anyone to call him overrated.
If so, the only remaining question now is where Green-Beckham is going to go to school. Per the National Football Post, he has narrowed his options to four schools: Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri and Texas. He also recently insisted that he has not yet ruled out Alabama.
Exactly which way Green-Beckham is leaning varies depending on who you ask. NFP writer Dave Miller's best guess is that he'll end up with Arkansas, while ESPN's Texas analysts seem split on whether or not Green-Beckham will head to Austin.
There's no shortage of pundits who are speculating about Green-Beckham's ultimate destination, but the truth is that nobody really knows which school he is leaning towards. Nobody but him, anyway.
The rest of us will find out soon enough. He's going to announce his decision on Feb. 1st at his high school.
Rest assured, there will be plenty of coverage.
