Gunner Kiel Decommits from LSU: The Top 3 Replacement QBs Still out There

Randy ChambersMay 31, 2018

The LSU Tigers finally had their top quarterback prospect in Gunner Kiel, but he once again decided to decommit and join forces with Notre Dame. Although LSU does have a talented quarterback in Zach Mettenberger, they would like to have another quarterback that would at least provide competition and depth at the position.

There may not be a quarterback out there who is as talented as Kiel, but there are options.

Here are a few quarterbacks that the LSU tigers could pick up to replace Kiel.

Jameis Winston

1 of 3

Jameis Winston hasn't shown much interest in the Tigers to date, but with Kiel on his way out, things may change. He's verbally committed to the Florida State Seminoles but has recently explored his options, including Stanford and Alabama.

Winston is your typical dual-threat quarterback who has a very strong arm and makes great decisions with the football. He could be that exciting player that sparks this offense up and helps replace the two senior quarterbacks who are on their way out.

Jeremy Liggins

Liggins is another quarterback who can absolutely kill defenses with his feet. He isn't much of a quarterback prospect as he needs plenty of work on his arm strength and release, but we've seen several quarterbacks succeed at the college level with the same skill set.

It appeared LSU was the favorite earlier in the process, and now with Kiel out of the picture, the Tigers may once again become the front-runner. He's also considering schools like Mississippi, Mississippi State, Alabama and Auburn.

Anthony Alford

3 of 3

Alford is currently committed to Southern Miss, but much like Kiel, he may have a change of heart, considering a position just opened up at LSU. Alford is a dual-threat quarterback like all of the guys on this list, but he has a very strong arm and endless potential.

Alford visited LSU back in December, and although he prefers the spread offense, it would have to be difficult to turn down an offer from a top SEC program—especially if the quarterback position is open for the taking.
