ESPNU 150: Which Schools Need Top WR Recruit Dorial Green-Beckham Most?
Most of the top players in the ESPNU 150 recruiting class have committed to schools, but there are still a few major chips that have yet to fall. Perhaps the biggest is wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham who ranks No. 3 overall and No. 1 at his position. There is no shortage of teams vying for his services and while it's tough to tell where he might land, there are a few teams that need him more than others.
Green-Beckham is one of only two five-star recruits remaining according to the ESPNU 150, so it is pretty obvious that teams will be amping up their efforts to land him in the coming days. Here are three teams who must go for broke in an effort to bring DGB aboard.
Missouri
With nearly all of the top schools in college football in on Green-Beckham, there is no question that Missouri is a major dark horse. With that said, though, landing one of the top recruits in the nation would be a major coup for the Tigers. The main reason for that is the fact that Green-Beckham attended high school in Missouri. Keeping the top player in the state at home should be a priority for Mizzou.
While the Tigers have often been on the precipice of establishing themselves as a power in the Big 12, they haven't been able to sustain that momentum over a significant period of time. Securing Green-Beckham would be a big help, though, as it would make Missouri look like a legitimate recruiting threat to the bigger schools. I think it's safe to say that no school's reputation would get a bigger bump than Mizzou's in signing Green-Beckham.
LSU
With essentially just cornerback Morris Claiborne leaving on defense and uninspired quarterbacks Jordan Jefferson and Jarrett Lee leaving on offense, the LSU Tigers will have a great chance to return to the National Championship game next season. A lack of explosion on the LSU offense was exploited by Alabama in the title game, but Green-Beckham could single-handedly change that.
The Tigers obviously have to find a competent quarterback as well, but the 6'6", 220 lb. Green-Beckham has the physical tools to make even an ordinary signal caller look great. The Crimson Tide was able to stack the box against LSU in the National Championship Game because there was simply no vertical threat. DGB would add a completely new dimension to an already-good LSU squad.
Alabama
Alabama seems to find a way to reload season after season thanks to head coach Nick Saban's superior recruiting ability, but the Tide could really use a big-time recruit on offense. Quarterback AJ McCarron was already short on weapons in the passing game and now that running back Trent Richardson is going to the NFL, the cupboard could be pretty barren on that side of the ball.
Green-Beckham is very much from the same mold as former Alabama and current Atlanta Falcons receiver Julio Jones. Both are big and physical, but at the same time they possess top-flight speed. With the Alabama defense losing a lot of top players to the NFL as well, scoring may be of more importance in 2012, so Green-Beckham would be a huge get for Saban.
