Super Bowl 2012: AFC Representative Won't Be Too Popular in Indianapolis

Eric SmithJun 6, 2018

This is an interesting AFC Championship Game on Sunday. Both teams—the New England Patriots and the Baltimore Ravens—aren't thought of in too high of regards in Indianapolis.

I know most people here in the Super Bowl-host city would rather neither play in the Super Bowl. The thought of Tom Brady hoisting the Lombardi Trophy in Lucas Oil Stadium sickens Hoosiers.

The Patriots have a shot to further plant their spot in NFL history by winning their fourth Super Bowl since 2000. The Colts and Patriots rivalry has been heated, and many people in Indianapolis would rather see New England lose each week than the Colts win.

I've been to the games in Lucas Oil Stadium and the old RCA Dome. It's very hostile and loud.

Now, Tom Brady and the Patriots have a shot to come to town, use all the Colts' resources and play for a Super Bowl on the Colts' home field. That wasn't how many fans envisioned the first Super Bowl to ever come to Indianapolis play out.

On the flip side, there's not as much hatred for the Ravens, but there's still a strong dislike.

I totally understand why fellow citizens of Baltimore hate the Colts with a passion. This was their team for many years, and they just left abruptly overnight in Mayflower trucks en route to Indy after Robert Irsay said they weren't going anywhere.

He was a jerk and classless owner. I get that and feel bad for the fans who lost their franchise over night. After all, when most teams switch cities, they take on a new nickname and colors. The Colts obviously didn't. Those people have had to watch their old team in the same colors year after year, dominating for the past 14 seasons.

The city of Baltimore has since received a football team, obviously, and they're ironically playing for a chance to surpass the Colts in earning their second Super Bowl since 1984. And it will be on Indy's home field.

That makes people in Indy cringe as well.

If it wasn't for what the people do to the Colts' team when they get to town and see that hatred, I don't think people in Indy would have anything against the Ravens.

Every time when the Colts return from Baltimore, in which most cases (minus this year) was a victory, the horror stories players tell about how crazy their fans are come out.

So, when the clock nears 6 p.m. on Sunday evening, the representative of whichever team will be in Indianapolis from the AFC will become a reality. Brace yourselves, Indy natives, because you're not going to be happy with either one of the teams.
