WWE: 5 Reasons Why Kane Is the Most Unique Big Man in the Company
He is the classic 1950s black-and-white Universal Studios monster come to life. He is also the modern-day hybrid of Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees. He is the beast under your bed, in your closet, in your head.
Yes, he's even a Metallica lyric.
I, for one, am really enjoying Kane's run right now on Monday Night Raw. He is back in his element as the big vicious predator who will stop at nothing to destroy anyone in his path.
In this PG era of WWE, it seems hard to believe that Kane could get over in any real way due to content restrictions, his brand of evil censored to appease the sponsors.
But, he is not only over; he is only getting stronger with every week.
For my money, Kane is the best WWE old-school monster heel of all time. With all consideration to his "brother" Undertaker, as there is no disputing his legendary status in the business, I believe that Kane has come to occupy his own unique space. He has taken the Deadman's gimmick and put his own spin on it.
No one compares to Kane, and here are five reasons why.
5. He's Unpredicatable
1 of 5Most big men that work heel have always followed the same routine: big talk, harsh words and one power move after another, while intimidating any man half their size.
Kane, on the other hand, has gone after everyone in the company over the years, from Triple H, to Stone Cold Steve Austin, to Undertaker. He has never focused only on workers smaller than him, nor has he attempted to throw his weight around without being able to back it up.
As far as his work in the ring, while he does of course use high-impact moves, he is a very capable worker who can mat wrestle against virtually any opponent. Unlike many other big men through the years, Kane does not stand in one place, and expect his opponent to do all the work to make him look good. He gives as good as he gets.
Another aspect of his unpredictability is the fact that a feud with Kane is never a straightforward, black-and-white affair.
He is capable of doing anything at anytime, and just when you think you have him figured out, he comes at you from another direction. To face Kane is to face a man who will do anything, stoop to any demonic level, to get you to abandon all sense of humanity. He destroys you from the inside out, and no one is better at it.
Not exactly your run-of-the-mill big man.
4. He's Not Concerned with Championships
2 of 5Kane has held numerous championships in WWE. He has even held the top prize in the company. But, if none of that had ever happened, it would not have mattered in the slightest.
Kane is not the kind of heel who cares all that much about the gold. While most other heels do all they can to win and establish themselves as someone important in the company, Kane instead chooses to decimate everyone around him.
Kane is like a demon-possessed Rock 'em Sock 'em robot who beats and bashes his opponent with heavy hands and hard boots. It's not pretty, and it's not your typical top-notch championship contest when he's in the ring, but rest assured, if it's carnage you want, then Kane is your man.
The Big Red Monster exists solely to inflict pain and suffering. If his victim happens to have a belt, then he will take that too, just because he can.
There are always championship matches to pique fans' interest and the storylines building up to those bouts will always receive some heavy focus by WWE. But, when Kane is involved, nothing is ever quite as it seems, and that means some real drama—and some real fun—for the crowd to get sucked into.
3. He's Theatrical
3 of 5The typical big man comes out, flexes his muscles, growls, throws some clotheslines and then goes back to the locker room. It's tried, it's true and it is the way the business has gone for big men from the start.
It's also extremely boring.
When Kane hits the ramp, you know that you're in for something different. His physical appearance is that of an over-the-top comic book villain who is on his way to a showdown with Superman.
The fire, the ominous organ that opens his entrance theme, the red lights that bathe the arena when he walks down the aisle—the entire presentation for Kane is very theatrical, and it does not stop there.
His ability to shake off an attack, by sitting straight up as if he was the killer in a horror movie, only adds to his character and though it was borrowed from Undertaker, Kane has made it all his own.
Kane is not the typical big man, and his entire persona from the entrance, to his appearance, to his ring work, screams originality.
Nothing boring about that.
2. The Mask
4 of 5Admit it, when Kane returned for his latest run, you were hoping that he would be wearing the mask again.
It's a definite favorite, and is just another way he is different from other big men who came before him.
The mask provides a level of mystery, an element of scariness, that adds to his character. While he was very effective without it, the fact is this is the Kane that we all know and love.
Like Jason in Friday the 13th, Kane's imposing stature, combined with the mask that now covers most of his face, makes him a horror movie come to life. The mask emphasizes his dominating appearance, and it only adds to the intensity that he brings to his ring work.
When a luchador wears a mask, it is normal and expected. When a seven-foot 300-pound man in red and black wears it, there is nothing normal about that.
Not everyone could pull off the image and really make it work. Kane does it like no one else could.
1. He's Psychological
5 of 5For me, this is the best part of his character, and is the biggest reason why he is the most extraordinary big man in WWE.
While most men his size rely on intimidation and physical strength, Kane employs some very intense psychology to set him apart from the pack.
Just physically dominating his opponent is not enough for Kane. He wants to get in the man's head and break him down before the match ever takes place.
Playing mind games is what Kane does best. His current heat with John Cena is just another example of why it's perfect for him, and why it works.
Fans anticipate a John Cena heel turn, and expect that the feud with Kane will be the spark that makes it happen. But, the reason this is the case is because fans know that Kane is the man who can cause Cena to embrace his dark side.
Every week, Kane shows John that nothing he does makes a difference, that the only thing he has is the hate. The desperation that is beginning to show in John is very evident, and I believe that it will manifest itself in the heel turn that fans have been wanting to see for a long time.
It has been said that Kane is Darth Vader, and Cena is Luke Skywalker. I see the analogy, and it makes sense in this situation. But, the biggest difference?
Vader's mind games didn't work. Kane's will.
That is why he is psychologically the best big man, and most extraordinary big man, in WWE.
