NBA Trade Rumors: Trading for O.J. Mayo Will Not Appease Nets' Deron Williams

Andrew KulhaJan 16, 2012

If the New Jersey Nets think that Deron Williams will be convinced about remaining with the team and signing a long-term deal because they bring in O.J. Mayo, they are crazy.

Williams obviously wants to play with a superstar, and I don't blame him.

In a current NBA that features teams with multiple superstars, there is no way the Nets can compete with a team that really only features him.

The Nets know this, as does Williams, so the pressure to bring in a high-profile superstar is on.

However, I don't see the latest rumor from rotoworld.com really perking up Williams' ears. Sorry, Nets fans.

"

The Memphis Commercial Appeal confirms that the Nets offered Anthony Morrow (or Jordan Farmar and a draft pick) to the Grizzlies in exchange for O.J. Mayo.
The Grizzlies "explored" the offers -- no deal is imminent, but either one is "there for the taking" if they want to deal Mayo. It seems likely that he'll finish the season somewhere other than Memphis, as they have no intention of extending his contract, but these talks with New Jersey are merely being corroborated after Yahoo! Sports first reported them on Thursday. For now, we're not reading too much into it.

"

Talks about bringing in Dwight Howard certainly would do the trick, but this is a far cry from the potential blockbuster trade that was proposed earlier in the season.

While Mayo is no slouch, his career averages of 15.7 points, 2.7 assists and 3.4 rebounds per game prove that he's a far cry from a superstar. Furthermore, his numbers have dipped so far this season.

He's only averaged 10.7 points, 1.5 assists and 3.7 rebounds so far.

While he certainly is an upgrade over Sundiata Gaines, Anthony Morrow and MarShon Brooks, he won't be enough to keep Williams in alone.

They'd have to make another big move to compliment this one. However, the more big-name players they have on the roster, the more cap room it's going to take.

The more cap room they take up, the less they can give either a big-name trade target that may need to re-sign or Williams if and when he wants to re-sign.

If this is the first part of a bigger idea, I can see how it would work out. However, Mayo on himself will not be a big enough name to keep Williams happy.
