NBA Trade Rumors: Minnesota Timberwolves Should Acquire O.J. Mayo
The Memphis Grizzlies are shopping O.J. Mayo around, and the Minnesota Timberwolves would be wise to get in on the bidding.
The Grizzlies have discussed a potential Mayo deal with New Jersey, but those talks don't appear to be going anywhere.
With the Nets dropping the ball, Minnesota should swoop in and snatch the explosive shooting guard.
Thanks to Kevin Love, Ricky Rubio and Derrick Williams, the T'Wolves are one of the most exciting young teams in the league. But if they are going to make some real improvement in the win column, they need to upgrade at shooting guard.
Minnesota 2-guards Wesley Johnson and Wayne Ellington have been beyond awful this season.
Johnson is only shooting 32.9 percent from the field, including a horrid 21.6 percent from three-point range. He's scoring just 5.1 points per game and currently has the worst Player Efficiency Rating of any NBA player averaging more than 20 minutes a night.
Ellington hasn't exactly been spectacular either. He's scoring a career-low 5.5 points per game, despite playing a career-high 19.3 minutes per game.
Meanwhile, Mayo is producing at a much higher level while basically playing the same amount as Johnson and Ellington.
In 23.5 minutes per game, he's averaging 10.7 points and 3.8 rebounds while hitting 45.9 percent of his field goals. He's also shooting a career-high 42.9 percent on threes.
For the first time in years, basketball is exciting in Minnesota. But if the T'Wolves want to turn their playoff dreams into reality, they need to acquire Mayo.
