UFC 142 Results: 5 Things We Learned About Edson Barboza
On Saturday night, Edson Barboza delivered one of the most spectacular knockouts in MMA history, as he landed a beautiful wheel kick which put Terry Etim out cold.
It was the third round of the fight, and in the previous minutes, Barboza was winning, but not landing anything shocking or significant.
This wheel kick came out of nowhere, and stiffened Etim up like a board, and put him out before he even hit the ground.
With the win, Barboza moves to 10-0, including 4-0 inside the Octagon.
Here are five things we learned about Edson Barboza at UFC 142.
His Takedown Defense Is Excellent
1 of 5Barboza was able to keep the fight on foot for the entire time that it lasted, and he was able to do that because of his takedown defense.
Several times, Etim shot in for a takedown, only to have it stuffed by Barboza.
He should face a strong wrestler next to see how good it really is.
He May Have the Best Technical Striking in the Lightweight Division
2 of 5For the entire fight, Barboza was able to pick Etim apart using effective Muay Thai and pinpoint striking.
Aside from Donald Cerrone, there may not be anybody out there who comes close to Barboza's level of technical striking.
Barboza now has seven career wins coming via (T)KO, and there look to be plenty more where that came from.
Move over Chris Lytle, Edson Barboza Is Here
3 of 5Edson Barboza was the big winner last night, as he took home both fight of the night and knockout of the night awards, netting himself an extra $130 thousand. That's not bad.
With the awards, Barboza is now up to four fight night awards in four UFC fights. Also not bad.
Barboza now has three fight of the night awards and one knockout of the night.
Chris Lytle has the record for most fight night bonuses with 10. Look out. Barboza is coming for that.
He Will Forever Be a Part of UFC History
4 of 5With his outstanding win last night, he becomes the first fighter to win a fight inside the Octagon with a wheel kick.
That will be shown on highlight reels for years to come, along with knockouts like Anderson Silva over Vitor Belfort, Lyoto Machida over Randy Couture and Dan Henderson over Michael Bisping.
This is a knockout that will not be forgotten.
He Has Some of the Best Kicks Around
5 of 5I guess I should say something about that kick, right?
The wheel kick knockout was the first in UFC history, but it just proves that Barboza has some of the best kicks in MMA today.
In addition to the win on Saturday, Barboza has won two fights due to leg kicks, and almost defeated Anthony Njokuani using a wheel kick at UFC 128.
He's got flashy kicks, but as seen on Saturday, they're effective.
