Anthony Johnson on Dos Santos, Jones and Silva: 'I'll Fight Them All'
Anthony Johnson is prepared to rumble with anybody, regardless of weight.
At a media gathering for UFC 142, SporTV caught up with a much beefier Johnson to talk about his move to middleweight and upcoming bout with Vitor Belfort.
""When the UFC called me and asked me if I would fight at 185, I said sure, and they told me who, 'you want it?' I said yeah. So, it was not a doubt in my mind that I would take the fight. I could fight at 205 if they asked me to, and I could fight at heavyweight if they asked me to. It doesn't matter to me."
"
Outside of a few catchweight bouts, this marks the first time Johnson has ever ventured outside the welterweight division. The UFC isn't cutting him any slack either. In the co-main event for UFC 142, Johnson will step into the cage against MMA legend and former UFC light heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort.
Johnson, who is coming off back-to-back wins over Dan Hardy and Charlie Brenneman, has a great opportunity to propel himself into middleweight title contention with a win on Saturday night.
""[Belfort's] just dangerous overall. As far as being careful, I just have to fight smart and stick to my game plan. I can't try and fall for whatever he's doing. I have to stick to what I know and what I trained for, so, I'm not worried about a left hook, I'm not worried about uppercuts, and I'm not worried about the crowd booing me. No matter what, I'm going to go in there and do my best."
"
Johnson's bout with Belfort came close to being cancelled after the former welterweight contender came in 11 pounds overweight at the official UFC 142 weigh-ins on Friday. Belfort requested that Johnson not weigh more than 205 pounds on fight night.
Fortunately, Johnson tipped the scales at 204.2 pounds in his second attempt, and the fight will proceed as scheduled.
The dream for Johnson lies beyond Belfort. His ultimate goal in the UFC is to be a world champion, and Belfort is just a roadblock in the path to achieving that goal.
A big question for Johnson is whether or not he'll remain at middleweight or drop back down to welterweight.
"Rumble" isn't looking to put all of his eggs into one basket. He'll fight anybody at any weight.
""Vitor is human. Jon Jones is human. [Junior] Dos Santos is human. Anderson [Silva] is human. I'll fight all of them because that's what athletes do, that's what fighters do, and that's what champions do. I might not be a champion yet on record, but in my mind, I'm a champion, so I'm going to fight like I'm a champion, I'm going to train like I'm a champion. I'm going to do everything I possibly can do to be the best and be a champion one day."
