WWE: 10 Reasons Why John Cena Has to Win the Feud with Kane
John Cena and Kane are currently involved in the top feud on Monday Night Raw, and there has been a lot of debate about where this rivalry is going.
Some have speculated that it will lead to a character change for Cena. Others have brought up the idea of a potential Cena heel turn. And many think it's going absolutely nowhere.
Regardless of exactly where it's headed, though, most Internet fans want to see Cena get chokeslammed to hell and lose this feud.
While I'm certainly not the biggest Cena fan out there, I actually still want to see him get the better of Kane.
Why? Well, here are 10 reasons why John Cena has to win his feud with Kane.
10. So Kane Can Move on to Something Else
1 of 10Let me start by saying that though the feud between Kane and John Cena had/has the potential to be a great one, I simply haven't been a fan of the way it's been booked so far.
It's been way to cheesy and too "1980s horror film" for me.
As you might imagine, that's made me want to see this feud end in the near future, and the only way I really see that happening is if Cena wins it.
Think about it: If Kane just beats the crap out of Cena every week and beats him in their matches, do you honestly think that's how the feud is going to end?
Hell no.
The only way Kane is going to stop targeting Cena is if he finally gets Cena to embrace the hate or if Cena rises above hate, and I think we all know what the likelier of those two scenarios is.
Thus, let's just get the inevitable Cena win out the way and have Kane move on to something else, and by something else, I mean something better.
9. To Help Elevate Zack Ryder
2 of 10Zack Ryder has been a huge part of this feud so far, as big a part as John Cena himself, actually.
Though Ryder's tire-changing segment on last week's episode of Raw totally bombed (anyone surprised by that?), it does appear as if Cena's rivalry with Kane is being used to help elevate Ryder as well.
And that's certainly good news for Ryder fans.
"Long Island Iced Z" has appeared in the closing segment on Raw for two straight weeks now, and though Cena was involved in both segments as well, I'll still take that as a sign that Ryder is in the midst of at least somewhat of a push at the moment.
That's thanks primarily to Cena, though, so Ryder will only go as far as Cena does.
Cena loses, Ryder loses. Cena wins, Ryder wins. It's really that simple.
8. To Make Vince McMahon Come to His Senses
3 of 10Vince McMahon is largely set in his ways.
That is, he's not going to change something that's working just because a very vocal minority of fans don't think it actually is working.
In other words, McMahon is probably not going to give Cena a new gimmick or turn him heel just because the older fans boo him every time he enters the arena.
That being said, McMahon has to come to his senses at some point and realize that Cena's campy character just isn't working anymore, and I think this feud with Kane could help him do that.
If Cena beats Kane (let's say in a match at Royal Rumble), he is going to get bombarded with boos and become even more hated by the older fans. We may think that Cena gets a "mixed reaction" now, but fans are really going to hate him if he goes all "Super Cena" on Kane.
And that's precisely why I want to see it happen.
Cena overcomes all odds again, the fans absolutely despise him for it and then McMahon finally realizes that we're tired of the same old crap.
Sounds more like my dream than what will happen in reality, though, huh?
7. Winning the Feud Does Little for Kane
4 of 10If we're just being honest here, neither John Cena nor Kane really needs to be winning feuds at this point in their careers.
But If I had to pick who needs to win this one more, I'd say Cena does.
Though Cena has spent the last six years or so at the top of the WWE, he's only 34 years old and likely has another five years or so at the top. Scary, I know.
Meanwhile, Kane is already 44 years old and likely doesn't have more than a year or two left in his storied career.
I'm kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place right now, but I'd say it's better for the WWE, long term, to let Cena win this feud since he's still got a big portion of his career ahead of him.
As for Kane, what exactly does a win in this feud do for him?
I guess it helps re-establish him as a monster heel, but given that Kane likely isn't going to become World champion or anything like that anytime soon, that's about all it does.
6. To Make Older Fans Hate Cena More
5 of 10Like I mentioned in a previous slide, John Cena is going to be hated even more by the older fans if he gets the best of Kane in this feud.
Quite simply, they're just tired of seeing Cena win, especially when he does so by "overcoming the odds," like he will have to do against Kane.
That might be a blessing in disguise, though.
If Cena wins this feud, then that will give his haters all the more reason to loathe him, and in turn, it will only allow the "Will Cena embrace the hate?" storyline to continue in some sort of different direction.
One that doesn't have to involve Kane.
Cena can still move forward with this battle against the fans who hate him and want to see him go bad. It will just take on a different form.
5. To Tweak His Character
6 of 10Whether he wins or loses his feud with Kane, there are still ways to tweak John Cena's character.
It just might make more sense to do so if he wins it.
Let's say, for example, that Cena gets the best of Kane in this rivalry and is still drowned in boos every time he makes his way to the ring. That opens the possibility of Cena changing his character without Kane being involved whatsoever.
Cena could start to get frustrated over the fact that he beat Kane and moved on from him, but fans would still rather boo him than cheer him.
This, in turn, could lead to the boos affecting Cena during his matches or promos to the point where they cause him to screw up and gradually show that the hate is hurting his performances.
It's not the ideal situation for Cena, sure. But Cena would be doing something that at least resembles a character change.
4. To Continue the "Embrace the Hate" Storyline with Someone Else
7 of 10Although having Kane attempt to get John Cena to "embrace the hate" is a decent idea, it's not one that the creative team has to stick with.
The "Will Cena embrace the boos?" storyline doesn't have to live and die with Cena's rivalry with Kane.
That is, it can continue with someone else.
If I was on the creative team, I'd have Cena beat Kane at the Royal Rumble to end that feud and then bring The Rock back to continue the "embrace the hate" storyline.
The Rock always gets huge pops these days, so theoretically, you could have The Rock return to a massive chorus of cheers and rip Cena for still getting booed despite the fact that he just "rose above hate" to beat Kane.
I could picture The Rock saying something like this: "These people like me, John. But even though you bust your ass for them 365 days a year, they still can't stand Mr. Fruity Pebbles. That has to bother you, doesn't it?"
This would be a great way to keep Cena's ongoing storyline with Kane going...without having Kane involved.
3. So He Can Stop Ignoring Criticism
8 of 10John Cena is a bit hypocritical in the way he goes about things.
His slogan is "Rise Above Hate," but it really should be "I Ignore Criticism," because that's what he does week in and week out.
Though Cena addresses the fact that he gets a "mixed reaction," he does not truly consider the things that fans criticize him for. They blast him because he's been virtually the same character for six straight years, he always wins and he hardly ever sells any moves or beatdowns.
Instead of listening to the WWE Universe, who he says he loves so much, though, he simply ignores their criticisms and moves forward. But what he is really doing is failing to pay attention to what I like to think is constructive criticism.
Cena's like the hot-headed high school baseball player who doesn't want to listen to anything the coach has to say. He just goes ahead doing the same thing over and over again while expecting different results and expecting to improve.
Newsflash: That's not going to happen until you use that criticism to change for the better, and perhaps beating Kane in this feud and still getting no respect from the older fans will make you want to start listening to that criticism a little more closely.
2. To Help Turn Him Heel
9 of 10The ideal outcome of this rivalry for John Cena haters is for "The Champ" to turn heel.
While that could happen were Cena to lose to Kane, it's much more likely to happen if Cena beats The Big Red Monster.
Like I've mentioned in previous slides, the setup for a Cena heel turn really is simple: Cena beats Kane, the fans still boo him and then, finally, Cena snaps because he doesn't understand why the fans hate him for, oddly enough, rising above hate.
This isn't very complicated booking, either.
Cena just needs to beat a monster heel like Kane but still be viewed like a heel himself despite the victory. That way he can move forward with an "If you want to treat me like a heel, then I'll act like one" attitude.
1. To Build Momentum for His WrestleMania Match Against the Rock
10 of 10John Cena cannot lose his feud with Kane. He just can't.
It makes no sense to book Cena to lose a rivalry to someone like Kane in January, just two-and-a-half months before Cena is supposed to beat The Rock at WrestleMania 28.
Though Kane is an established veteran and certainly no slouch, he's not viewed on the same level as someone like The Rock.
Therefore, if Cena can't beat Kane, then it's going to be hard for us (and even younger fans, too) to think that he can seriously beat The Rock in arguably the biggest match ever.
That would be like the Green Bay Packers losing to the Cleveland Browns right before the Super Bowl—it's going to be a lot harder to view Cena as someone who's worthy of beating The Rock if he can't beat someone who was doing Santino Marella's trumpet celebration less than a year ago.
