Tyler Wilson Staying at Arkansas: Why a Heisman & BCS Title Is Within Reach
With the college football regular season over, it's time for the upperclassman to make a decision on whether they should stay or leave early for the NFL draft. Razorback fans can breathe a little easier now knowing that their starting quarterback Tyler Wilson will stay for his senior year.
This move doesn't really come as a surprise, but you never quite know what these kids are thinking. You have to wait for the official announcement before you can celebrate. Now it's time for Arkansas fans to celebrate because their future looks really bright.
Arkansas has a chance to win the BCS National Championship next season. With Tyler Wilson returning, they will have as potent of an offense in all of college football next year.
This is a team that averaged 35 points per game last season and that was without star running back Knile Davis. He's coming back, along with several big targets to whom Wilson will throw.
Looking at the schedule, it's really not that difficult. The Razorbacks play a lot of teams that are extremely young and rebuilding.
Of course they play Alabama and LSU, but both of those games are in Arkansas. The Tigers and Crimson Tide just lost quite a bit of talent on both sides of the ball as well. Sure, they'll still be contenders, but the Razorbacks' chances are looking that much better.
The Razorbacks lost both games pretty badly against Alabama and LSU last year. But with a healthy Davis at running back, they're going to have another way to attack those stifling defenses.
That was really the Razorbacks' only weakness on offense this year and it came because of injury to the junior running back.
Defensively, this team is going to lose a little bit of depth. But with a great recruiting class and a fantastic offense to help make up for a sub-par defense, they should be fine.
Speaking of recruiting, Arkansas may also be the team that lands top wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham.
He's a 6'6", 220-pound beast that would give this offense another weapon. The Razorbacks can already score with anybody, but facing Green-Beckham would be scary for any secondary.
As for individual awards, Wilson has a shot at the Heisman Trophy. Wilson had a great season last year, throwing for over 3,600 yards and 24 touchdowns.
He also completed a solid 63 percent of his passes and limited his interceptions to only six. With even more offensive weapons than last year, you'd have to assume those numbers will be even better.
Then let's say USC quarterback Matt Barkley (who is probably the Heisman favorite) puts up similar numbers to Wilson. Would you really pick a quarterback that's playing against Pac-12 defenses over a quarterback putting up the same numbers in the SEC? I don't think so.
The season has just ended and there are already some major changes going on, particularly in the SEC. With Tyler Wilson making the decision to come back, it not only changes the Heisman race, it also puts another team in the BCS National Championship conversation.
