Manchester United: 10 Reasons Why Paul Scholes Can Carry Club to Title

Karla Villegas GamaJun 3, 2018

Manchester United is seeking its 20th Premier League title, and after 20 games, the Red Devils sit second in the table with 45 points. The leader, so far, is archrival Manchester City, three points ahead.

With a squad full of youngsters, Scholes left retirement and returned to action at the third round of the FA Cup.

But at age 37, what can Scholes offer a team that hasn't advanced from the group stage of the Champions League since the 2005-06 season and is chasing another Premier League title?

Motivation

1 of 10

A veteran like Paul, who has played over 450 games with the first team and scored more than 100 times, surely knows how to give some pep talk.

Chris Smalling recognized, after the FA Cup match against Man City, that, "It gave the young lads a lift just to see him preparing for yesterday's match."

Support

Let's face it, United has a hospital rather than a squad. With so many injuries, Scholes' support is something Sir Alex Ferguson needed.

Money

Having a man like Scholes on the field will help fill a void, which also means saving money in a time in which debt is sky high

Talent

4 of 10

Paul's skills as a midfielder are undeniable; he creates plays, distributes the ball and gives the team drive. All of those are very much needed right now.

Discipline

5 of 10

Probably two of Paul's cornerstones are the way he works on and off the pitch and his devotion to his family; both impact the team, utterly.

Back in October, his agent, Harry Swales, told The Guardian, "He's always been a player who wanted to play and train hard, and when he'd finished, go home to his family."

Respect

6 of 10

He's one of the squad's standard-bearers. Having been part of the same team for so many years surely helped him to set an image and become one of England's top players.

Confidence

7 of 10

When a team has so many injuries and several painful results, you need to rely on those you know.

At the end of the day, those feelings and expectations (that originally came from the manager) will be paid by the player on the pitch and spread to the teammates.

Passion

8 of 10

After several tough patches, like missing the Champions League's round of 16 for the first time in five years, some players were ready to give up.

According to Chris Smalling, "We can count ourselves lucky because we were close to throwing it away."

Physical Attributes

9 of 10

Despite being away from the first team for eight months, Scholes is in great shape, which is necessary for a championship like the Premier League, a team like Manchester United and a position in the midfield.

Furthermore, he is a very strong player that can handle pressure and tackles.

Vision

10 of 10

Paul's vision to create plays—his ability to find spaces either to pass or shoot—makes him a very valuable asset. He's accurate and can keep the ball longer than his teammates that play that position.
