2012 NFL Free Agents: Underrated Players Who Can Make Major Impact

Chris TrapassoJun 7, 2018

The 2012 free-agent class is deep and loaded with premier talent.

While the NFL draft is a great place to build a team, the free-agent period cannot be ignored. Adding veterans to fill roster holes is never a bad idea.

Let's look at three more unheralded free agents who have the ability to contribute for a new club in 2012.

Pierre Garcon, WR, Indianapolis Colts

Amid an incredible free-agent wide receiver class that includes Vincent Jackson, Reggie Wayne, Wes Welker, DeSean Jackson, Marques Colston and Dwayne Bowe, Garcon is somewhat of an afterthought.

However, the 25-year-old wideout has certainly proved his worth during his four NFL seasons.

In 2011 without Peyton Manning, he delivered his most productive season as a professional.

Garcon reeled in 70 passes for 947 yards with six touchdowns.

At 6'0'' and 210 pounds, the former Mount Union star can be used as a possession-type receiver, but his yards-after-the-catch ability is certainly his greatest strength.

Add him to a team with an established receiver, and Garcon can flourish as he enters the prime of his career.

Jonathan Fanene, DL, Cincinnati Bengals

There's a good chance the Bengals re-sign Fanene, the disruptive defensive lineman.

After inking a one-year deal at the start of the season, the former standout at Utah tallied 6.5 sacks this season on one of the better defenses in the AFC.

He's a good situational pass-rusher and isn't a liability against the run. Although Fanene possess good upper body strength, he often gets into the backfield with great burst and suddenness off the ball.

This Bengals player would be a great, more underrated addition to just about any team.

BenJarvus Green-Ellis, RB, New England Patriots

The Patriots may let Green-Ellis walk, with Stevan Ridley and Shane Vareen waiting in the wings. He isn't an overly explosive runner, but he is perfect to wear down opposing defenses and grind out yardage between the tackles and in the red zone.

On a team with more of a run-first mentality, the Law Firm could become a more productive player.

He'll be 27 this summer, but he hasn't received a ridiculous amount of carries early in his career.
