Jerry Jones to Look in Mirror, so What Do the Cowboys Need to Do After He Does?

John RozumJun 6, 2018

In an article by Jamie Tobias of WFAA-Dallas/Fort Worth, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones may make some changes:

"

"We'll make some changes; I'll assure you we'll make changes," [Jerry] Jones said. "When you work for yourself, there's not but one thing to change — that's what's in that mirror."

"

However, Tobias added at the end:

The Cowboys owner offered no specifics about what changes might be afoot for the Cowboys.

"

That being said though, maybe this provides a glimpse of hope to Dallas Cowboys fans everywhere heading into the 2012 offseason and ultimately into the 2012 regular season.

To counteract the statement, however, Michael David Smith of NBC Sports gives his viewpoint:

"

"But if Jones has already ruled out delegating the personnel decisions to someone else, it’s tough to see what changes he can impose on the man in the mirror. Jones has built this roster, and the roster he built fell short of the playoffs. If he’s not going to delegate the personnel authority, then the changes he’s making to himself will be merely cosmetic."

"

The word sticking out like a sore thumb here is "cosmetic." Smith gets a direct hit with that, as it would not be surprising at all if Jones were to make changes solely for making himself look like a better owner.

So, let's say Jones does look in the mirror, what are his Dallas Cowboys to do?

Well, being that it appears Jones is seemingly more open to changes, some of his top players should come forward and say what needs to be done. After all, they are the ones on the field and know exactly where to improve.

In turn, that will give Jones a more eclectic approach to getting Dallas back atop the NFC East. And if the players can get through to him, then so can the coaches, and ultimately the fans will have gotten what they deserve: a winning franchise.

If we're talking improvements, trading up to draft one of the best corner's (Dre Kirkpatrick or Morris Claiborne) this spring is needed. Dallas finished rank no. 23 in pass defense by allowing 244.1 pass yards per game. It cost them a trip to the playoffs and they finished 1-4 after starting 7-4.

The concern for anyone though, is whether Jones fully commits to making the necessary changes. There's a reason why Jimmy Johnson and Bill Parcells aren't coaching there anymore, and it's because of Jerry Jones.

Nonetheless, it's certainly an interesting situation now that Jones may begin to delegate. Then again, let's not get ahead of ourselves as this is Jerry Jones we're talking about.
