English Premier League Power Rankings: Week 19
This weekend, all 20 of the Premier League clubs took part in the third round of the FA Cup and it produced numerous moments to remember.
Manchester United won the Manchester derby over rivals Manchester City with a controversial red card decision early in the match.
Arsenal won their third-round match thanks to an old friend, Thierry Henry, who lit up the Emirates Stadium with energy after his goal.
Along with Man City, Blackburn and Wigan were also eliminated from the tournament over the weekend while Wolves, Bolton and QPR will have to play in third-round replays to advance to the fourth round.
As always, last week's ranking is in parentheses.
20. Wigan (20)
1 of 20Wigan started and ended their FA Cup campaign on Saturday as they fell to League Two club Swindon Town.
Callum McManaman scored for the Latics to open the scoring, but that was not enough as keeper Ali Al-Habsi let in two goals, with the winner coming in the 76th minute from Paul Benson.
Roberto Martinez and company will now host Manchester City in league play on Monday at the DW Stadium.
19. Blackburn (14)
2 of 20Blackburn fell to Newcastle in FA Cup play on Saturday.
Just like Wigan, Rovers went up with an early first half goal, courtesy of David Goodwillie in the 35th minute.
And just like Wigan, they gave up two goals—the winner in this match was a 90th minute Newcastle goal.
With Steve Kean still in charge of the club for now, Rovers will host Fulham on Saturday at Ewood Park.
18. Queens Park Rangers (19)
3 of 20QPR survived elimination from the FA Cup for now as they drew with MK Dons on Saturday.
Heidar Helguson scored for the R's to earn them a replay at Loftus Road on January 17th.
The draw was not a good enough result for manager Neil Warnock to keep his job, as he was sacked on Sunday and replaced by Mark Hughes.
Hughes' first game in charge will be on Sunday at Newcastle.
17. Bolton (17)
4 of 20Bolton also barely survived elimination on Saturday against Macclesfield.
An amazing goal by Macclesfield's Arnaud Mendy almost sunk the Trotters, but David Wheater was able to equalize and send the match to a replay on January 17th at the Reebok Stadium.
Before the replay next Tuesday, Bolton have the honor of hosting second place Manchester United at the Reebok Stadium on Saturday.
16. Wolverhampton (18)
5 of 20Wolves were one of the first clubs to take the pitch in the FA Cup third round on Saturday and they will be one of the last to finish the third round.
A goalless draw with Birmingham was the result that Wolves earned and they, too, will play a replay next Tuesday at home.
Before their third-round replay, Wolves have to take a trip to London to visit Tottenham at White Hart Lane on Saturday.
15. Swansea City (16)
6 of 20Swansea had a fairly easy time advancing to the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday, as they beat Championship club Barnsley.
Danny Graham scored twice for the Swans as Angel Rangel and Nathan Dyer both scored a goal apiece in the 4-2 win on the road at the Oakwell Stadium.
Coming off the win, Brendan Rodgers and company head back into the Premier League as they host Arsenal at the Liberty Stadium on Sunday.
14. Everton (13)
7 of 20Everton took care of non-league Tamworth at home on Saturday.
The Toffees' 2-0 win saw goals from John Heitinga and Leighton Baines.
Everton get to play two Premier League games this week with a rescheduled match at Tottenham on Wednesday and then a trip to Aston Villa on Saturday.
13. Aston Villa (12)
8 of 20Aston Villa's trip to the Memorial Stadium to play Bristol Rovers was a success, as the Villains won 3-1.
Marc Albrighton, Gabriel Agbonlahor and Ciaran Clark all scored in the win.
The win in the third round in the FA Cup means that a trip to Arsenal will be ahead in a few weeks in the fourth round of the competition.
12. Fulham (15)
9 of 20Fulham cruised to victory in the FA Cup third round against Charlton thanks to a hat trick from Clint Dempsey.
The in-form American scored scored the first three of the Cottagers goals, with Damien Duff netting the fourth in the shutout win.
A trip to struggling Blackburn is ahead in the league on Saturday for Fulham.
11. Norwich City (11)
10 of 20Norwich also fired four goals past their FA Cup third-round opponents at home on Saturday.
The Canaries got a goal each from Grant Holt, Simeon Jackson, Andrew Surman and Steve Morison in their 4-1 win over Burnley at Carrow Road.
A first of two trips to West Brom in the next three weeks is ahead in the Premier League on Saturday for the Canaries before the visit The Hawthorns again in the FA Cup fourth round at the end of the month.
10. Sunderland (9)
11 of 20Sunderland continued their form under new manager Martin O'Neill with a 2-0 FA Cup win over Peterborough on Sunday.
Sebastian Larsson and James McClean were the goal scorers for the Black Cats in their away win.
A Premier League trip to Chelsea is ahead on Saturday as the club look to take points from another one of the top four after beating Manchester City on New Years Day.
9. West Brom (10)
12 of 20West Brom came out on top of a six-goal shootout with Cardiff on Saturday at The Hawthorns.
Simon Cox scored a hat trick in the 4-2 win. Peter Odemwingie also scored in the Baggies' victory.
The Baggies will look to get back on track in the Premier League as they look to improve their 15th-place position in the table against Norwich at home on Saturday.
8. Stoke City (7)
13 of 20Manager Tony Pulis' return to Gillingham was a positive one for Stoke as the Potters scored three unanswered goals to advance to the FA Cup fourth round.
The Potters got goals from Jonathan Walters, Cameron Jerome and Robert Huth to win on the road in the FA Cup third round.
The busy season continues for Stoke on Saturday as they visit Anfield to take on Liverpool.
7. Newcastle (6)
14 of 20Newcastle avenged their Carling Cup defeat to Blackburn by taking down their fellow Premier League club in the FA Cup on Saturday.
Jonas Gutierrez was the hero for the Magpies, as he fired in a 90th-minute goal to give the club the win.
Alan Pardew and company will host QPR on Sunday at the Sports Direct Arena in Premier League play.
6. Chelsea (5)
15 of 20Chelsea blew past visitors Portsmouth on Sunday in a 4-0 victory.
Ramires scored twice, with Juan Mata and Frank Lampard each scoring once at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues will continue their fight for fourth place on Saturday as they host Sunderland in the Premier League.
5. Manchester City (1)
16 of 20Manchester City faced a ton of adversity on Sunday in the Manchester derby and were unable to overcome it.
After Vincent Kompany's red card in the 12th minute, City went down by three in the first half before attempting a comeback.
Alexander Kolarov and Sergio Aguero scored in the second half, but they could not earn the win as the fell short and lost 3-2 to Manchester United and were eliminated from the FA Cup.
City is still alive in the Carling Cup and will face Liverpool on Wednesday in the semifinal of that competition before visiting Wigan on Monday.
4. Arsenal (4)
17 of 20What a homecoming it was for Thierry Henry on Monday at the Emirates Stadium.
After signing on loan from New York Red Bulls, Henry came off the bench and scored in the 78th minute to give the Gunners an FA Cup win over Leeds United.
The Gunners now must not look ahead to their clash with Manchester United in two weeks, as they have to take care of Swansea first on Sunday in Wales.
3. Liverpool (3)
18 of 20Liverpool piled on the goals at Anfield on Friday as they blew out Oldham Athletic in the FA Cup.
The 5-1 win saw goals from five different players as the Reds cruised into the fourth round of the competition.
The Reds will now look to advance in the Carling Cup as they play at Manchester City in the first leg of their semifinal on Wednesday.
After the Carling Cup battle, the Reds will head home to Anfield to host Stoke on Saturday.
2. Tottenham (2)
19 of 20Tottenham were yet another top Premier League club to cruise to victory as they beat Cheltenham on Saturday at White Hart Lane.
Jermain Defoe, Roman Pavlyuchenko and Giovani Dos Santos powered Spurs to the 3-0 win over the League Two club.
Spurs have a chance to go level with Manchester United on Wednesday as they play their game in hand that they have over United at home against Everton at White Hart Lane.
1. Manchester United (8)
20 of 20Manchester United were able to take down rivals Manchester City in the FA Cup on Sunday on the road at the Etihad Stadium.
Wayne Rooney's two goals and Danny Welbeck's 30th-minute goal gave United three first-half goals, which was enough against 10-man City by the score of 3-2.
United will now look to break their two-game losing streak in the Premier League on Saturday as they host Bolton at Old Trafford.
