BCS Championship: LSU vs. Alabama About as Interesting as Watching Paint Dry

Carl StineJun 7, 2018

Thank you, Trent Richardson, for sparing us from another four quarters of ugly.

Instead, it was only three-and-a-half quarters.

And the only touchdown of the game was immediately followed by a missed extra point.

How fitting.

The final: Alabama 21, LSU 0

Let's lay aside all the soliloquies about a great defensive game and all that crap.

This game was flat boring.

Most of us enjoy a great defensive battle as much as the next guy, but this was more about the ineptitude of LSU's offense than the two defenses battling it out.

As much as the intrepid reporting team of ESPN tried to make the broadcast interesting, attempting to accomplish such a feat is like trying to sort out the BCS rankings.

Alabama moved the ball pretty consistently, amassing nearly 400 yards of total offense, but repeatedly came away with field goals until Trent Richardson broke through with just over six minutes left in the game.

Those that feel as if the BCS is a sorry system now have some pretty good fodder to throw into the discussion, as both teams have beaten each other once, their only losses of the season.

Forgive me, Tiger and Tide fans, but watching this game was nearly as painful as having wisdom teeth removed.

Third-down conversions were as far apart as the two fanbases, and the punters were the MVPs of the game.

The teams combined for only six penalties, five against LSU, and both turnovers were by the Tigers.

At the beginning of the game, it was as if the offensive coordinators were trying to out-bumble each other, farting away possessions with stupid decisions (leaving Richardson out early) and poor play-calling.

A.J. McCarron was a bright spot, completing 23 of 34 attempts, but only averaged 6.7 yards per pass.

As for LSU, it could not reach 100 total yards of offense, Tyrann Mathieu did nothing, Jordan Jefferson was tormented all night and the rest of us along with him.

The rest of the BCS games were exciting, with the possible exception of the Sugar Bowl, but this one has to be in the running for one of the most boring BCS title tilts in history.
