5 NBA Teams That Need to Blow Their Rosters Up

Kelly ScalettaJan 9, 2012

There comes a time when an NBA team realizes that the roster they have just isn't going to get it done. You're not a player or two away. You're just not going to get any better than you are right now.

Sometimes it's because players are just past their prime. Sometimes it's just that even if everyone reached their potential, it's just not going to be good enough.

Whichever it is, that day arrives where a GM has to look in the mirror and acknowledge reality—that they team they've assembled just isn't getting it done and isn't going to get any better.

When that happens, it's time to blow up and rebuild.

Here are five teams that have reached that point.

Phoenix Suns

1 of 5

In one of the most inexplicable moves of the offseason the Phoenix Suns just said "no" to reality and re-signed Grant Hill.

Why?

I have no idea why. This is a team that is clearly headed for rebuilding and is clearly in total denial about it.

I get that they want to keep their two-time MVP, Steve Nash. I don't fault them for not wanting to trade him.

But seriously, Grant Hill?

Milwaukee Bucks

2 of 5

When you look up and down the Milwaukee Bucks roster, you go, "Hmm...not bad...he's OK...eh...I guess so." If you ranked their starters on a scale of one to 10, you'd probably end up just using fours, fives and sixes.

They are average.

No offense Milwaukee, but these deer are not to be feared. At least you have the Packers.

Houston Rockets

3 of 5

The Rockets are much like the Milwaukee Bucks, but you might pull out one or two sevens or eights. They are mostly an average team that has a couple of payers that can be special.

Kyle Lowry, when he's not throwing basketballs at women, can be the kind of player that can lead a team deep into the postseason.

Not this team, though. There's just not enough there to work with. Granted, where Houston has an edge on everyone else on this list is that they know it.

At least hey tried to make a move.

Boston Celtics

4 of 5

The Boston Celtics were in the finals two years ago, but at the age of their big three, that might as well have been a lifetime ago. The team still has what it takes to go deep, but not deep enough.

Paul Pierce is 34, Kevin Garnett 35 and Ray Allen 36. That's just too much age to have in your core.

The trio still have trade value and the Celtics are better off blowing this thing up than trying to retain the core for another oust from the postseason.

Atlanta Hawks

5 of 5

Yes, I know that Atlanta just beat the Miami Heat and the Chicago Bulls. I also know this core hasn't made it past the second round of the playoffs in all the years they've been together.

It's called not being a prisoner of the moment. Joe Johnson is just not a guy you can count on to carry you to the promised land.

Look at Kobe Bryant

Now look at Johnson.

Look at Michael Jordan.

Now look at Johnson.

Get the picture? If your top player is a shooting guard, and that shooting guard is Joe Johnson, you aren't going to win it all.
