Ricky Rubio Gets His Very Own Trippy Theme Music
It would be pretty easy to set the play of Ricky Rubio to music. The Minnesota Timberwolves' super-rookie has a style of his own on the court, consisting mainly of no-he-didn't passes and smooth moves that would put the cast of You Got Served (even more) to shame.
If it were me, I would choose a soundtrack of rambunctious jazz or hard-thumping hip hop. Something to get the juices flowing, you dig?
Daniel Lopatin, AKA Oneohtrix Point Never, had other ideas. Rubio's play on the court inspired him to name a song after him.
Well, it's not really a song. Oneohtrix Point Never is an experimental musician, you see, and his tribute to Rubio is more like an instrumental designed to send listeners on a trip.
Since I can't describe it, you better just give it a listen. Here's "Rubio," retrieved via Yahoo! Sports:
If you're into stuff like this, your mind has just been blown.
If you're not into stuff like this, you're probably wondering how the hell anybody could be into stuff like this.
I have to admit that this kind of music isn't really my cup of tea, and I don't quite see how it matches up with Rubio's play on the court. To me, this sounds more like background music that would be played in a Legend of Zelda temple set in outer space.
But oh well. Not many people, superstar athletes or otherwise, can claim to have their own trippy theme music, so Rubio has that going for him.
Besides, it's just a matter of time before ESPN or some other highlight machine gets a hold of this tune. That's when we'll start seeing slow-motion Rubio highlights set to Oneohtrix Point Never's soon-to-be famous "Rubio" track.
I would be just fine with that. It's better than having ESPN beat the Beastie Boys or The Black Keys to death by using their fine music in highlights. I'm pretty sure they've already pillaged every song on El Camino, and that album has only been out for a month.
So hats off to Oneohtrix Point Never. At the absolute very least, he's given us something unique.
