National Signing Day 2025: News and Predictions for Top Available Recruits
The 2024 college football season is over, as Ohio State defeated Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game on Monday night. But the sport's news cycle rarely slows down, especially on the recruiting trail.
The next significant date on the college football calendar is Feb. 5, which is the traditional national signing day. The importance of this event has gone down in recent years, as many high school players sign with college programs during the early signing period in December. But there are still some noteworthy players who have waited to sign.
Here's a look at several top high school recruits who remain unsigned, along with predictions for where each will end up.
Ty Haywood, 5-star OT
1 of 3
Last July, Ty Haywood committed to Alabama, giving the Crimson Tide one of the top offensive linemen in the 2025 recruiting class. However, the Ryan High School (Denton, Texas) standout decommitted on Jan. 13, making him the top uncommitted player at this point in the recruiting cycle.
The No. 18-ranked player in the 2025 class (per the 247Sports Composite rankings), Haywood could soon choose a different school. The 6-foot-5, 285-pound tackle visited Michigan last Friday, and On3.com recently reported that he appears to be "trending" toward the Wolverines.
Florida State and Texas Tech made pitches to Haywood, according to Anthony Broome of On3.com. So it appears other schools tried to get into the mix after Haywood announced he may not be going to Alabama.
But at this point, it feels like it would be a surprise if Haywood doesn't choose Michigan.
Prediction: Michigan
Zahir Mathis, 4-star EDGE
2 of 3
Zahir Mathis, a 4-star edge rusher from Imhotep Institute in Philadelphia, announced his decision to decommit from Ohio State on Nov. 18. And this month, he's busy taking official visits ahead of national signing day.
On Jan. 10, Mathis went to Florida State. He'll visit Michigan this upcoming weekend, and then he'll go to Maryland the weekend after. So it appears there could be quite a few teams in the mix for the 6-foot-6, 225-pound defensive end, who is the No. 73 player in the 2025 class (per 247Sports Composite).
According to Chris Nee of 247Sports.com, Mathis' "focus is down to" Florida State, Michigan and UCLA. That would leave Ohio State and others on the outside.
While there are still several possibilities, the guess here is that Mathis will pick the Seminoles, who will add more defensive talent to their 2025 class.
Prediction: Florida State
Onis Konanbanny, 4-star CB
3 of 3
Onis Konanbanny has been committed to Tennessee since Aug. 23. But that doesn't necessarily mean the cornerback from Heathwood Hall Episcopal School (Columbia, S.C.) will end up signing with the Vols early next month.
The No. 313 player in the 2025 class (per 247Sports Composite) took an official visit to Florida before the end of the season, and the Gators remain a potential landing spot for the 6-foot-1, 180-pound corner. In fact, some 247Sports recruiting experts are predicting that he'll pick Florida over Tennessee.
In recent days, Konanbanny has also been posting about the Gators on social media.
So don't be surprised if Konanbanny flips his commitment and signs with Florida in the near future. Things could be trending in that direction at the moment.
Prediction: Florida
