Steph Curry: 'The Emotional Roller Coaster' Is 'Very Volatile' amid Warriors' Season
Stephen Curry says the Golden State Warriors' 21-20 start to the season has been an "emotional roller coaster."
"It's very volatile right now in terms of the emotional roller coaster this year," Curry told ESPN's Ohm Youngmisuk. "Similar to what it was like that [2021-22 season that ended with a championship].
"I think it's a challenge for us to just try to maintain confidence in what we're doing, what we're building. And until we run out of time, we have to maintain it."
The Warriors lost just three of their first 12 games to start the season. That stretch ended with a five-game losing streak, and Golden State has struggled to get back on track since. In their last 24 games, Curry and the Warriors have won just seven times.
According to ESPN research cited by Youngmisuk, the Warriors are the first NBA team to dip below .500 after starting the season at 12-3 or better.
This recent slump included arguably the least successful outing of Curry's NBA career, during which he was held without a field goal in a 144-93 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies on Dec. 20.
Curry expressed confidence after the loss that the Warriors would break out of the slump.
His frustration has appeared to mount since then, especially after losing on Jan. 8 to a Miami Heat team that was playing in the second half of a back-to-back set.
The Heat, who had played to double overtime the night before, claimed a 114-98 win that got the Warriors booed by their home crowd.
The Warriors' record isn't the only challenge Curry has faced over the early stretch of the season. While facing multiple injuries including an ankle sprain, his production has dipped to an average of 23.0 points per game.
The Warriors could consider bolstering the team's depth ahead of the Feb. 6 trade deadline, although Curry recently responded to trade rumors by telling commenters to "shut up a little bit and let us figure this thing out."
Curry and the Warriors have reason to hope they can bounce back from a midseason slump. During their run to the 2022 title, the Warriors went 7-16 over a 23-game stretch starting in February.
Golden State ultimately rebounded, ended the season on a five-game win streak, and went on to win the championship. Curry will now hope he, Draymond Green and the Warriors are destined for a similar upward trajectory in 2025.
Golden State could start out the second half of the campaign strong if they are able to defeat the defending champion Boston Celtics when the two teams face off Monday afternoon at 5 p.m. ET.
