WWE Saturday Night's Main Event XXXVIII Match Card Predictions Ahead of Go-Home Raw
WWE Saturday Night's Main Event returns to NBC and Peacock on January 25 with another jam-packed lineup, with Jey Uso challenging world heavyweight champion Gunther in the main event.
Will Uso YEET his way to the most prestigious singles title on Raw, or will Gunther once again halt Uso's progression as a singles star and, in the process, make it 3-0 against the immensely popular Superstar?
Find out with this preview of the live event broadcast special, including predictions for each of the night's announced match-ups.
Shawn Michaels Oversees Cody Rhodes vs. Kevin Owens Contract Signing
1 of 4
Less of a match and more of an in-ring promo, the contract signing between Cody Rhodes and Kevin Owens for their Ladder Match for the Undisputed WWE Championship at the Royal Rumble will give fans who tuned into the last Saturday Night's Main Event an opportunity to see the next logical progression in the rivalry.
Expect cutting words from both men and teased physicality until San Antonio's own Shawn Michaels, overseeing the contract signing, breaks them up.
Owens assaulting Michaels for added heel heat should not be out of the question but is less likely due to his clear role as the head of NXT.
Braun Strowman vs. Jacob Fatu
2 of 4
Strowman vs. Fatu is a battle of the big men, a physical battle between two unstoppable forces Saturday night.
While there is likely a big spot that will capture social media's attention, the outcome should not be in question.
This is a stepping stone to bigger, better things for Fatu, who has been the breakout member of The Bloodline and someone WWE clearly has huge plans for based on the increased mic time designed to get him over as a talker with the audience.
This should be a lot of fun for those who enjoy the heavyweight clashes but the biggest takeaway will ultimately be how well, or not, Fatu is put over as a dominant force as he embarks on the singles, star-making run most expected for him.
Prediction: Fatu
Intercontinental Championship Match: Sheamus vs. Bron Breakker
3 of 4
Sheamus has done everything there is to do in WWE except capture the Intercontinental Championship. He has had his chances but has always managed to come up short, thanks to a variety of reasons.
Most recently, he was involved in a Triple Threat Match that saw him and Ludwig Kaiser fail to unseat Bron Breakker. Without Gunther's right-hand man taking up space, The Celtic Warrior will have the opportunity to complete his otherwise sparkling resume by knocking off the second-generation star and winning the one championship that has eluded him.
It will not be easy as Breakker is a freakish athlete with nearly unrivaled speed and tenacity. He is also the future of the industry and someone Triple H and the creative team want to protect.
The question is whether WWE wants to make a statement on a network broadcast by having Sheamus finally achieve his goal in a feel-good moment or use it to set up one last match, perhaps as late as WrestleMania, where he can win the gold on the grand stage.
WWE made headlines at the last SNME with the coronation of Chelsea Green as the inaugural Women's United States champion. This would be a perfect chance to switch the gold and set up a rematch for WrestleMania, where Breakker wins the big one on the grand stage.
Prediction: Sheamus wins the IC title
World Heavyweight Championship Match: Jey Uso vs. Gunther
4 of 4
Uso has earned the world heavyweight title.
He broke free of The Bloodline, established himself as a singles star, built his own reputation in that role, and became one of the most popular competitors in the industry. He sells a ton of merchandise and routinely generates one of the loudest reactions in any arena he enters.
He also has a hell of a story as the tag team specialist with his twin brother, who fans once failed to be able to identify, and set that all aside to prove himself.
He did and a world title victory on a nationally televised special would be the exclamation point on a two-year run that announces to the world that Jey really is Main Event.
Unfortunately, nothing about the minimalist build for this match feels like that outcome is in the cards.
Gunther will retain his title, likely due to interference from Drew McIntyre as they continue their feud or through some other form of chicanery, while Uso is left disappointed once again, seemingly unable to thwart The Ring General.
Prediction: Gunther retains
