NBA Announces Schedule Changes for Lakers, Clippers, More Amid LA Wildfires
The NBA announced Wednesday the makeup dates for some of the games postponed last week due to the wildfires in Los Angeles and inclement weather in Atlanta.
The Los Angeles Lakers will host the Charlotte Hornets on Feb. 19 after their Jan. 9 matchup was originally delayed. The Hornets will return to L.A. on March 16 to face off with the Los Angeles Clippers, with their Jan. 11 contest affected by the wildfires as well.
The Atlanta Hawks, meanwhile, will welcome in the Houston Rockets on Jan. 28 after wintry conditions led the NBA to postpone their Jan. 11 game.
Other games on the schedule were impacted due to the new dates:
While the wildfires in Los Angeles continue to burn, the Lakers resumed their regular schedule Monday night in a 126-102 loss to Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs.
"Win, lose, draw, this game is over and everything's still going on in the world," Los Angeles star Anthony Davis said after the game. "Bittersweet in a sense because we still have people who are dealing with real-life situations and we get to go out here and play basketball."
Head coach JJ Redick revealed the home he and his family were renting in Southern California burned down as a result of the wildfires. Mementos they had collected over a decade as a family were lost forever.
The Clippers were also in action Monday night, earning a 109-98 win over the Miami Heat at Intuit Dome.
"They are losing everything and you're focused on basketball," guard Norman Powell said in the wake of the victory. "It's a tough thing to focus on like it's normal. You're in this city where there are tragedies and fires are going on. But like I said, we got a job at hand, they cleared us to play, so you got to focus on that."
Forward Nicolas Batum reflected how he "was on the phone with my family all day" before the Clippers' 126-103 loss to the Denver Nuggets on Jan. 8, the day after the Palisades Fire started.
"I think I stopped checking my phone three minutes before game," he said. "I checked at halftime. I never do that. Just to make sure my wife and kids were OK."
The Lakers have one more game that needs to be rescheduled. Their Jan. 11 matchup with the Spurs has yet to get another confirmed date.
