Josh Selby: Grizzlies Rookie Charged with Marijuana Possession
It was well-documented entering the NBA draft that Kansas guard Josh Selby had character concerns. Because of that he fell to the Memphis Grizzlies at No. 49.
It hasn't taken long for Selby's issues to come to the forefront in the NBA, as Ronald Tillery of the Memphis Commercial Appeal is reporting that he has been charged with marijuana possession in connection with an Oct. 5 incident at the University of Maryland. "I have no comment about it," Selby said. "It is what it is."
Selby is an excellent talent and that much was clear in his one season at Kansas. If not for a suspension at Kansas for receiving improper benefits, there is a good chance he would have went in the first round. Unfortunately, it seems as though he continues to find trouble.
It isn't yet known if Selby will receive any discipline from the Grizzlies, but if the league remains consistent then the NBA front office likely won't take action seeing as the infraction took place during the league's lengthy lockout.
Selby has played sparingly in his rookie year for the Grizzlies, averaging roughly 15 minutes per contest over four games. He hasn't been excellent by any means, but he has certainly shown some flashes with 4.5 points and 2.8 assists per game.
Every indication thus far is that he will continue to play until the process plays out further. According to Tillery, Grizzlies general manager Chris Wallace doesn't plan to take any sort of action against Selby in terms of a suspension or other form of discipline until more is known.
You have to believe that Selby was already walking on eggshells when he fell in the draft, but this marijuana charge only furthers his troublemaker image. A team with as much young talent as the Grizzlies have will likely be willing to deal with it for now, but he'll have to grow up at some point.
Perhaps the best way for an athlete to make people forget about off-the-court transgressions is to perform on the court. If Selby can continue to display skill and work his way into the rotation more heavily, then he can begin to put this behind him.
