Klay Thompson: 'No Point in Looking Back' on Warriors Career After Joining Mavericks
Dallas Mavericks shooting guard Klay Thompson isn't spending a lot of time reflecting on his tenure with the Golden State Warriors.
"That chapter is over," Thompson told Andscape's Marc J. Spears after a 122-120 loss to the Denver Nuggets on Sunday. "I'm in the midst of trying to win here. There is no point in missing anything when we have such a great opportunity here to be great. There's no point in looking back …"
"I got to look forward," he added. "I got to try to give my best self here."
Thompson will be back in the Bay Area for the first time as an opposing player on Tuesday night as Dallas travels to face Golden State.
The five-time All-Star spent the first 13 years of his career with the Warriors, winning four championships as a member of the organization. Alongside Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, Thompson helped them form one of the most accomplished trios in NBA history.
The sharpshooter ranks No. 6 on Golden State's all-time scoring leaderboard and No. 4 on the team's games played list.
Thompson joined the Mavericks as part of a sign-and-trade agreement in July, receiving a three-year contract worth $50 million from Dallas.
In 10 appearances to open his 2024-25 campaign, he's averaged 13.8 points and 3.7 rebounds per game on 41.8/35.4/100 shooting splits. The Mavericks sit at No. 11 in the Western Conference standings with a 5-5 record.
Thompson revealed that he hasn't kept in touch with Curry and Green following the change of scenery.
"Not really," Thompson said, per Spears. "I will see them when I see them. That's it."
The Warriors are planning on honoring the veteran by referring to Tuesday's contest as "Salute Captain Klay" night, handing out a captain's hat to 18,064 fans to commemorate Thompson's passion for boating (h/t ESPN's Kendra Andrews).
He'll receive a tribute video from the organization and Curry is also expected to say a few words at center court prior to the game.
Tip-off for Tuesday's contest is at 10 p.m. ET.
