Under Armour All-America Game 2012: Breaking Down Winners and Losers
The obvious winner from Thursday's Under Armour All America Game was the White team, which dominated the Black team, 49-16, at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg Florida.
But at a high school football showcase like this, the real score-sheet revolves around the prospects and the big-time programs recruiting them. So who made out best from the UA Game? And who wished they'd never ended up on national TV?
WINNER: Alabama
It's only fitting that "Sweet Home Alabama" could so often be heard ringing through the Trop, seeing as how the Crimson Tide rolled through the festivities with no regard for parity.
Nick Saban's squad came into the game with six verbal commits among the participants and added two more among the five that announced their intentions during the festivities—5-star safety Landon Collins (more on him later) and 4-star athlete Cyrus Jones.
On the field, good tidings were all around, thanks to a 75-yard touchdown grab and a 93-yard punt return for a touchdown by Amari Cooper, not to mention a 40-yard interception return by Jones.
All told, the Tide, with one of the top recruiting classes in the country set for National Signing Day, gave little reason on Thursday for anyone to believe that they won't continue to roll so long as Saban is at the helm.
LOSER: Landon Collins
By now, you've probably heard about and/or seen Landon Collins' commitment to Alabama at the UA All-America Game that drew the ire of his mother. Of course, the fact that he's listed here as a loser has nothing to do with his football future. He's a tremendous safety prospect and could find time on the field for the Tide as soon as next season with the impending departure of All-American Mark Barron.
Rather, Collins gets a Stephen Colbert-style "wag of the finger" for putting himself in his mother's doghouse. The New Orleans native passed up a chance to play in front of his friends and family most Saturdays while betraying his existing geographic ties.
Realistically, though, it's tough to fault the kid for picking either program, so long as he's comfortable with his trips home being unusually awkward from here on out.
WINNER: Florida State
The Seminoles didn't add any new names to their list of commits at the UA Game, but frankly, they didn't need to—they already had six verbals competing.
And the ones there did plenty to acquit themselves well for Jimbo Fisher. Quarterback Jameis Winston looked like a surefire successor to E.J. Manuel at Florida State, completing 8-of-9 for 178 yards and two touchdowns while being named the game's MVP. Defensive lineman Dante Fowler Jr. made his mark on the game, too, registering a sack for the Black team while playing within shouting distance of his high school.
If one All-Star game is any indication, the 'Noles should be in good shape to reign atop the ACC for at least the next four years.
LOSER: Deion Sanders Jr.
Former 'Noles great Deion Sanders may have been proud to see his son Lil' Deion in the game, but he couldn't have been happy with the way he played. Sanders Jr. was burned several times, most notably on Amari Cooper's 75-yard catch for a score.
Prime Time's kid came into the game as a lightly-recruited athlete out of Flower Mound, Texas, drawing some curious looks from folks who wondered if he really deserved to play with the elite among his high school peers.
And frankly, Sanders Jr. did little to dispel either of those notions with the way he played at the Trop.
WINNER: The Rest of the SEC
As tempting as it may be to lavish 'Bama with unmitigated praise, let's not forget that the rest of the SEC had a pretty good showing, too. South Carolina and Ole Miss each garnered a fresh commit on the evening. Florida saw cornerback Brian Poole return a pick 93 yards to the house and safety/linebacker Marcus Maye pick up a fumble and block a punt for a safety.
In all, the SEC had 25 non-Alabama recruits playing in the game, proving that America's most dominant football conference is likely to remain that way for the foreseeable future.
