BCS National Championship 2012: Why Tide Won't Turn in Alabama vs. LSU Rematch

Ryan RudnanskyJun 7, 2018

History suggests that it's hard to beat the same powerhouse twice in the same season.

But, after defeating Alabama on Nov. 5, 9-6, the powerhouse that is LSU will reign supreme once again in the BCS National Championship Game.

Both teams have dominant defenses led by several players projected to land in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft. Names like Trent Richardson, Morris Claiborne, Dre Kirkpatrick, Courtney Upshaw and Dont'a Hightower are destined for the pros.

The defenses are almost a push for me. I'd give a slight edge to LSU based on big-play ability and having the sensational Tyrann Mathieu, who has been arguably the best defensive player in the country this season.

The passing games are similar; neither team wins throwing the ball.

The real difference for me lies in LSU's rushing attack, which has been virtually unstoppable this season. The Tigers out-gained the Crimson Tide in rushing yards on Nov. 5, 148 to 96, and that was despite Richardson being on Alabama's side.

LSU has averaged 215.2 rushing yards per game this season. But, the rushing attack has been even better under quarterback Jordan Jefferson, who was inserted under center midway through the season. The Tigers have averaged 284.2 rushing yards per game in the last four games.

There is still the chance that Richardson could bust out and change the entire dynamic of this game. He's that special. But, I don't see him exploding—not against this LSU defense which has allowed 2.6 yards per carry this season and gave up 89 rushing yards on 23 carries to Richardson on Nov. 5.

It's true that the Crimson Tide were just one field goal away from beating LSU earlier this season. But, the difference is the Tigers have gotten much better since. And don't forget, LSU has an advantage in the return department with Mathieu.

In the end, LSU will show it is, indeed, the top team in the country.
