NFL Rumors: Titans' Will Levis 'Not in a Quick-Hook Situation' amid Turnover Woes

Julia StumbaughOct 2, 2024

The Tennessee Titans plan to stick with starting quarterback Will Levis if he is healthy despite his four-to-six touchdown/interception ratio through Week 4, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.

Levis suffered a shoulder injury in the first quarter of his last start on Monday, only to watch as backup Mason Rudolph led the Titans to a 31-12 win over the Miami Dolphins.

Titans head coach Brian Callahan told reporters after Monday's win that Levis would "100 percent" remain the starter if healthy, a statement that Fowler described as "not lip service to my understanding."

"Levis, as of now, is not in a quick-hook situation, as the Titans seem intent on seeing the Levis experience through," Fowler wrote. "Levis has struggled with mistakes early in the season, but the upside is high. Tennessee needs to see what it has before it pivots."

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported that Levis "should be fine" to return to the lineup after the team's Week 5 bye week for an Oct. 13 contest against the Indianapolis Colts.

Callahan told reporters that Levis had suffered what was believed to be an injury to his AC joint.

According to Callahan, Levis "tried to come back" but was bothered by the injury.

"Ended up doing what he had to do to try to get back in the game, and ultimately I knew what kind of game it was gonna be with the bye week next week," Callahan said. "Didn't want to expose him to any further risk."

Unlike the Carolina Panthers' decision to bench their own young starting quarterback ahead of Week 3 of his second season, Fowler wrote that he doesn't see the Titans' relationship with Levis as "a Bryce Young situation."

The Panthers, who traded two first-round picks for the opportunity to select Young at the top of the 2023 draft, plugged veteran backup Andy Dalton after their 23-year-old starter recorded one rushing touchdown and threw three interceptions through two games.

Levis, like Young, has struggled early in his second season after a difficult first-year campaign. Unlike Young, however, Fowler believes Levis will get the chance to play out the campaign.

After getting off to a 1-3 start to the season, the Titans can give Levis the opportunity to develop his game. And, if he continues to struggle, the Titans could hope to add to their quarterback depth with a high pick in the upcoming 2025 draft.

For now the Titans will focus on getting Levis back on the field before returning to action at home for Week 6.
